1. I don’t work on restoring much during the summer months I think because I am in my garage all winter. It is almost time to go back into winter mode, the firewood is all stacked and thegarage is well organized but I am not looking forwards to it at all. I hope that changes soon. I am thinking of adding a lot more windows to my garage so I don’t feel so trapped this winter. Do you guys ever have issues like this.
2. Exactly the gov will fallow some state guidelines like they do for pharmaceutical’s using NYs laws. There will never be common sense in government. I have dealt with Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Ohio DMVs to get a title. They all have their quirks but they also have their loopholes. Last year I got a title for a 1934 olds but not by going straight to the DMV. I asked other old car collectors in my area how they were doing it first. I was told to go get an old judge who is still practicing law to do my paper work then present that paper work to the current county judge and have him tell the DMV to issue a title to me for a 1934 olds. When I went to the DMV with my paper work they tried arguing with me saying that there were not enough digits in the vin. I smiled and said this is all the digits they used in 1934 and that the judge ruled that I am to be given this title. Funny thing is that the computer didn’t really care at all she entered the numbers and out popped my title. The story about not enough digits does not apply to issuing a title it does however make it hard to trace an old title because the computer won’t search for less than 17 digits.
3. I have had nice looking women climb on my cars to have their pictures taken without my permission. I like my paint to be perfect and it sickens me to have any scratches. I have had to call the police before to get the other persons insurance info. It is vandalism and the cops don’t mind handing out citations for it. Cops in my area love old cars. I don’t eat at restaurants where I can’t see my car. When I take the wife out to eat I usually drive a work vehicle. Spit at me and its all done I have such a short fuse and very little self control. I am not saying its OK I am just saying I know what would have happened.
4. Thermal protection system is just saying heat shield in different words. You can change all the words you want it will not change the facts. We don’t carry propellant to slow down because we can’t. Any real aerospace engineer would know that.
5. Hey Joe - I see you have a case of the Oldsmobiles too. My topic isn't really a joke, it's more of a curiosity. I work with a lot of young engineers and this forum has a lot of older gentlemen like myself. I was curious about thoughts on the lunar rover and if anyone wanted to share thoughts on the Apollo moon missions. I have worked with engineers from Lockheed Martin, Boeing and NASA and have found this to be a fun topic. Occasionally, people get angry and we have to exclude them from the discussion or they exclude themselves from the discussion. Most people in the general public think that the space station and the shuttle program have something to do with outer space. Most people in the general public do not understand that it is a mathematical sniper shot to hit another body in space because we cannot adjust course easily once we are out of earth's atmosphere. I have seen the Apollo capsules and they truly are an engineering masterpiece for 1969. You mentioned the Challenger disaster. The Columbia disaster was due to heat shield failure on re-entry into our lower atmosphere proving that we still have a long way to go. We should be able to slow down and not just free-fall back to a landing. The resources for formulating what NASA did with the Apollo capsules will not be fully shared it appears from what I have seen. NASA does not seem to want to go into great detail on this subject. Well, this is a fun topic but it's my bedtime. Thanks for your response.
6. I was thinking about some of the more unusual cars made in the The lunar rover would be about the most unusual if it did indeed get driven on the moon. I am an engineer and from an engineering standpoint it is an interesting vehicle for sure. I was also curios about how many people on this forum think we were ever really on the moon? I never questioned the idea myself until two years ago when I was involved with a physics problem that was unsolvable due to certain laws of physics. That’s when I realized that there is more to this subject than what I thought I saw on TV. I am not saying I know we did or did not land on the moon LOL.
7. There is no doubt that blame could be placed in several areas. The area I have a problem with is passing students on to the next grade when they can not read. I don’t blame teachers for this because it is a systematic problem. We have been doing this long enough now that the parents can’t help because they were passed along without the skills to help. Passing these kids along without skills is not doing them or us any good at all.
8. I had to start thinking about this last year when another Oldsmobile ended up in my driveway. Over the last forty years a series of unusual events have put numerous Oldsmobile’s in my driveways and garages. In many cases I was not looking for another car at all. One was from a lady who said her husband had passed and she felt that I would be the best person to end up with his car. It was a red1966 442 that he had taken very good care of. Another was from when I was changing a flat tire in front of a Volkswagen dealership. I was driving a Camaro and the owner of the Volkswagen dealership walked out to where I was changing the flat and struck up a conversation. He had a 1964 olds F85 behind the dealership he wanted to show me. He sold me the F85 for $200 and it was in excellent condition. There was a 67 442 convertible that a guy brought to my house on a Friday night because he just got divorce papers served on him and he did not want his wife to get the car. A 66 holiday coup with green cool ray tinted glass that was given to me by a friend who was transferred over seas. There have been others but there is no good reason I can see why Oldsmobile’s. I did not have other Oldsmobile’s sitting around that would indicate to people that I liked olds. I think it is a little more than coincidental but I don’t know what to make of it. Does anyone else have certain cars that end up in their driveways like this?
9. It is sad that we have so many illiterate people in this country but that’s our school systems. Craigslist and EBay are useful but dangerous. We can find and buy almost any part today but some people don’t have the smarts to use these tools without screwing up then they want to give neg feedback. One of my biggest complaints is with fed x. I have gotten to the point where I wont buy from anyone who uses fed x for delivery. I ask to have my orders shipped any other way or forget the sale. I have refused to buy several items in the last few months because the seller used fedx only.
10. There are a lot of those stupid things said every day that bother me. The worst one is when a reporter says the driver may have been on drugs or alcohol like they are not the same thing.
11. I agree and do the same except when they are traveling an hour or two to get to my home. In that case I will hold an item. I don’t usually let anyone come to my home but sometimes it has to be done. I am 55 years old and I grew up poor but when I gave my word to someone it was as good as gold.
12. I scroll down through CL every morning when I get to my desk at work. I hit the report button on every listing that says one dollar. Those actually do get removed by the mods I also report dealers in the by owner section. If I list something for sale you can only respond to me by email and I will then decide if you are worthy of my time. I have found some amazing deals along with some bad people. A couple of years ago one of my daughters wanted a small motorcycle to commute back and to work on. We talked to someone in <ST1:pColumbus Ohio</ST1:p which is 55 miles away and told them we would take what they were selling. We told them we did not want to drive that far and find it was already sold but when we got there someone was leaving with the motorcycle. It was in a very nice neighborhood and a nice looking home but the people who were living there were worse jerks than any poor people or down on their luck types. These well to do slobs had no morals and did not think that there would be any consequences for their actions. They were wrong and we were at their home.
13. I have been going to auctions for almost fifty years. I don’t bid on something I want until the last second before the auctioneer drops the gavel. If two or three people have been biding and they think its over and then I jump in as a new bidder they tend to think screw it he’s just getting started at this price. Auctioneers don’t like guys like me and they have their methods of dealing with it. Online auctions are run by a computer and I don’t enjoy that as much. My wife just started going to auctions with me recently. My friends and I were shocked by how bad she gets auction buzzed. She will buy stuff that we cant possibly use just because in her head its too good of a deal to pass on.
14. Well that’s what you get for living in <ST1:pCrook County</ST1:p He will most likely get 10 days in jail and a three hundred dollar fine. People don’t get much jail time since 9/11 the idea is keep them on the streets and say we need more cops because of all the criminals. The real criminals are the guys wearing the black robes who do not hand out proper sentences.
15. This is just a few minutes off 80. You don’t want to miss out on it for sure. I feel like I am at home when I visit and don’t want to leave. There is a state park with an old lodge you can stay in that’s close to auburn. Its called Pokagon state park and was really cool in the 20s and 30s still is.
16. http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu147/benahn/soto_zps06e2ca6f.jpg Bought Saturday morning $350 cut the front end off and sold the rest to a Desoto guy. The car was to gone to save but it will live on now. http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu147/benahn/wallgrill_zps90e9f3c0.jpg http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu147/benahn/grill_zpscc8c3172.jpg
17. Yes, I bought a 1950 Desoto for $350.00 and fifteen minutes later I had worked a deal with a couple of guys from Cincinnati to take the parts they wanted and I got the parts I wanted. It was a complete car but the frame was so far gone that the car spread apart when we were putting it on the trailer. There were tons of Mopar parts, Model A and Model T parts, none of which I needed. There was a 1952 Chevy Pumper fire truck that my wife liked a lot but I said we don't need it. I did end up with a lot of stuff, made some new friends, seen some old friends and had a nice day. The 1931 Willys Knight was awesome. I wish I was looking for another project right now but I have too many. It went for $5200.00
18. This is one day away. Saturday and Sunday cars on Saturday, parts and things on Sunday. Is anybody from this forum planning to go? I think I will be there early Saturday to look everything over and I may come back on Sunday if I see something I would like to have.
19. If I made a TV show about one of my restorations it would be like a mini series. I could spend four weeks on one fender. There is rust removal, welding the cracks, dent removal, fine body fill, and paint. No one would want to watch my show but at least I could bring the camera in close when I finished for all to see. I have several young guys in my neighborhood they are in their early twenties and they hang out in my garage a lot. They ask me is that still the SAME part you were working on last week? They definitely watch to much TV.
20. Do these shows drive you nuts? They never show much of the body work when finished because it is BAD. I watched one the other night where they fixed up a charger and the hood was an inch lower on one side. They spent 50.000 and it looked like some kid put the body panels on while he was drunk? I understand that it is supposed to be entertainment only but they act like these fools are really fixing up a car.
21. The part of all this that keeps bothering me is that you are pulled over for the police or DOT police for a fishing trip. You did not break any law that they know of. Not speeding, not weaving, not anything at all that they can see, so you have no legal obligation to respond to any request to show them anything. Use a video devise with sound when traveling, have it ready to turn on. Ask whoever pulled you over why you were pulled over and if the answer is anything other than you were breaking a law it is a fishing trip and you can easily have it thrown out of court. I will smile and take whatever ticket they want to give me knowing that it won’t stand up in court. I don’t know every law in every state but I know my rights as a US citizen and I refuse to let someone take them away. I served in the military and I took an oath to protect the constitution when I joined. Being a cop does not give you the right to take my money on a fishing expedition.
22. He must have left out a lot of important details when he posted his add on ebay along with all the other pictures. Details like this car belonged to Elvis and was made for Elvis by George Barris. The car was in several movies with Elvis. The car is haunted by Elvis and it drives itself to the fried chicken shack every once in a while.
23. Thank you all for your responses. I did not know what this material should be made of. I guess what I have would be easy to form and fit.
24. I ordered and received a 25 foot roll of fender welt material a couple of days ago. I noticed that it is not rubber it is more of a vinyl over cloth type material. I have a feeling this will hold moisture. It will be used on a 1934 olds should I be looking for something more like 100% rubber?
