  1. There are three types of batteries we use in our cars. Flooded unsealed or as some people say wet is one type. Gel like an optima which are sealed so they can lie on their sides. AGM absorbed glass mat which also have Gel. There is no such thing as a dry cell battery.
  2. ice will lock them up but they have protection just like a garage door so as to not crush a kid or dog.
  3. Mine have been hit a couple of times, one time by city snow plow and one time by an elderly friend who just drove straight into the gate as if it were not there. I was able to repair both time myself without insurance. Mine are programed into the home link on the rear view mirrors so they don’t open for anyone but me.
  4. Liftmaster is the brand I have on my driveways with ten years of use and no problems. They were upgraded a couple of years ago with battery backup power. I don’t know of a bad brand but I do know that some are harder to interface with your home security. Liftmaster is fairly straightforward.
  5. The 3D printing part of it is actually the easy part. Programing the printer is of course the hard part. I purchased a cheep 3D scanner recently and it is fun to play with but the really nice one that I would like to have is in the $200’000 price range. That’s not going to happen for me.
  6. To say that it does not make any difference is a bit silly when you look at how many have commented on motor vs engine. Obviously it does make a difference to a large number of people. I have a good many young people hanging around my work shop taking an interest in older automobiles. One of the first things they learn is to use the proper terms. They learn to use the right tools and that if a job is worth doing it is worth doing right. One of my favorite things to tell them is that a job half done is not done at all.
  7. The only reason I said anything was because the guy picking on the OP for not using correct terms was himself not using the correct term. As mentioned by quite a few members that have went to some sort of automobile school or engineering school they were taught to use the correct term. Another one that gets me is flywheel, flex plate, ring gear. Then there is the newspaper people writing about a car accident and they say alcohol and drugs were not involved as if they were two different things. It’s all about education.
  8. I check out other car forums but seldom comment on anything. A couple of days ago there was a thread where a guy was asking about what gauge steel he should use for motor mounting. A member of the forum told him that what he should have said was motor mount stand since he already had the motor mounts. He gave a big lecture about using the right terms when asking a question but never answered the Ops question. I answered the Ops question and then went on to mention that motor mounts is also an improper term unless he was building an electric car LOL. I said if you’re going to lecture someone on using the right terms maybe you should do the same. He must have been a mod or someone with pull because I was booted almost instantly.
  9. Punctuation HA I don’t need no stinking punctuation.
  10. I rap black electrical tape around things that I want a better grip on and I can add a pair of channel locks. I piece of rubber or leather might be better if I want to insure that I don’t scratch something.
  11. I got it one piece at a time and it didn’t cost me a dime.
  12. I refuse to lower my IQ by reading anything written in the Washington post.
  13. your right i was wondering how offten seeing as how i have found a couple in a few months. the point was made that i was finding four door cars and i can understand that makes a difference for sure. i said i knew $2600 was a great price and i wish i had a bigger garage. I would take a few of them for that price if I had more room even if they are four doors. I am looking a lot these days for my next project the one i am on now has less than a year to go.
  14. I remember reading about auburns, cords, and or Duisenberg’s being used for a temporary dam in auburn Indiana. I think it may have been just auburns or cords. There was an article in the auburn museum on this topic. Last night I was looking around on the internet for that story and could not find anything on it. I know a lot of the cars were experimental or prototypes and they had v12s and some had v16s. Do any of you guys know much of this story or where to find more info?
  15. Thanks everyone for the replies I had no idea it was so common. I guess I need a bigger garage LOL.
  16. Last week there was a 1935 Chevy master that was complete in running condition in NJ craigslist for $2600. I know that’s a great price maybe someone on here got it. I found a 1934 dodge four door at a yard sale earlier this year unrestored and still drivable. So I am wondering how often you guys see a 1930s drivable car turn up?
  17. If you were to get a 1966 Chrysler imperial as a daily driver you wouldn’t need to worry much about safety equipment. Everybody else would. LOL
  18. i bought a very nice 1950 packard last year for $300 with title. The year bofore i bought a 1934 olds with bill of sale only and not much history on the car. i took the bill of sale and the very short serial number from the frame which is the vin number for a oldsmobile to a local attorny. I paid the attorny $50 and he made a offical looking letter for me to take to the county court. Muskingum county Ohio. about a mounth later I recieved a letter with my court date. I had to go to court and tell the judge that i was confident that everything was on the up and up. His people had ran the vin number and found nothing so i was given a title for court cost $100. I had just a couple of hours invested and $150 to get a 1934 oldmobile title in hand which increased the value of the car by a bunch. People make things sound as if they are so hard to do when they dont have a clue. Is it worth the risk? That depends on how much you are willing to risk.
  19. I read the local paper first then craigslist. I skip the comics in the paper because I know I am going to get plenty of humor on craigslist. Today I even replied to an ad. The ad was for a 1937 olds with all the windows shot out. It was sunk into the ground about a foot and had stuff growing up through it. The ad says that the car will need restored (sometimes they say needs a complete restoration) so I replied with are you sure it will need restored? Can it be driven the way it is? The pictures you posted are confusing me because it looks pretty good. I reply about once a week to ads like this but seldom do I get a response.
  20. http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/5170903472.html here is one done real nice and its asking price $36,000
  21. Not nearly enough pics or info to give a good estimate of worth. From the pics you do have I noticed some pretty poor workmanship. You said all steel body which would make a difference. That car could be bought for $20,000 easy in my area of the country from what I can see of it and that is being kind. Just my opinion.
  22. 1971 ford cortina mk3 with a 250CI inline six and a four speed.
  23. I have a 3D scanner and printer I can use at work. The scanner looks like a turntable and you set a part on it turn it on and it rotates. It makes a 3D file that can be sent to the printer. If we had some way of working together we could copy a part that we have and send it to another member of the forum. There are a couple of parts that I need that I could use the plastic replica to make a casting for and I know there are members who have that part on their car. So if you were missing a trunk hinge for an extremely rare car and I had that car I could easily make a copy for you. Would this be something you think we could do as members of a forum like this one?
  24. There are external voltage regulators that can be used on alternators with internal voltage regulators. Sounds like a crazy statement but yes and they are adjustable from 6volts all the way up to 20 volts. They are commonly used in racing and car audio competitions. It’s hard to tell what has been done with your cars electrical system without checking it all with a meter.
