  1. BTW, there is a 1950 Eight 23rd Series sedan kicking around New England that was fitted with a 356 ci engine, the largest engine in the lightest body, it also has overdrive. Probably quite a powerful driver.
  2. Swap the rear bumpers side-or-side. please. The curved ends go to the outside.
  3. ...from the five-main-bearing 327 ci installed in all their other models except the low-line 200/Clipper Special. Apparently, someone thought because the outgoing 356 was a nine-main-bearing that another was necessary, though failed to notice a large displacement was in order too.
  4. Oh, there is, for the 1951 Patrician, Packard created a nine-main-bearing 327 ci, which was installed exclusively in the Patrician sedans through 1953! Talk about creating an engine that was the equivalent of pi$$ing your pants in a dark suit! Other than a slightly higher horsepower rating, the difference in operation was imperceptible
  5. Wixom was initially set-up as an exclusively unit-body assembly plant, the '58 Thunderbirds and Lincolns the only products planned to build there. The 1958 Lincolns were changed to unit-body construction specifically to fill out the volume in conjunction with Thunderbird. Lincolns were selling in relatively low-volumes throughout the 1950's, 1956-'57 the exception. Because there was still a mix of high and lower content Lincolns and Thunderbirds offered at the time, what might be shown in this image are Lincolns and Thunderbirds with little more than the minimum standard equipment built at a higher units-per-hour and lower labor content rate. Typically, higher optioned cars were built in groups to allow a lower cars-per-hour build rate and higher labor content. Unit-body construction was viewed as the wave of the future, and seem to hold promise for more rigid body structures at lighter overall weight. While those qualities have been realized in the age of computer modeling and digital analysis, sixty plus years ago, it was slide-rules plus a healthy dash of gut-hunches. As the proposed '58 Lincoln grew larger, the advantages of unit-construction diminished, resulting in heavier than comparably-sized Bond-on-Frame cars.
  6. For those of us unfamiliar with the current costs, what would be the cost range to rebuilt this Stutz engine to be functional and dependable but consistent with preserving the overall originality otherwise?
  7. No, For the 1948-'49 22nd Series, the Deluxe Eight has the 288 c.i. straight eight, the Super Eights the 327 ci, only the Custom Eights have the nine-main-bearing 356 ci straight eight. While the 288 and 327 were a new generation straight eight that was developed from the architecture and tooling of the 245 ci six, the 356 ci was the straight eight that came on line for the 1940 160 and 180 Senior models, such as your Darrin victoria. The 356 was the Custom engine through the 1950 23rd Series. The 359 ci was the one-year-only 1954 Senior series nine-main-bearing created by increasing the bore and stroke of the 327 ci engine. The 359 was created in an effort to remain competitive with the other luxury make V8's until the Packard V8 could be brought to market for 1955.

  10. The Standard Catalog edited by Kimes and Clark list a roadster for both the 1933 Continental Beacon Four ($355) and the Flyer Six ($450). Which model was pictured? I've only ever seen the art rendering profile of the Beacon roadster. I suspect this is an extinct model, given the low popularity of open roadsters by then even if they were rock-bottom priced. Has anyone identified another make that shared the Hayes bodies with the Continentals?
  11. I suspect likely 108,400 miles, though appears to have had exceptional care, perhaps a chauffeur-maintained car. The original fabric driver's seat is unusual to find unless it was that or covered until recently.

Otherwise, if one wants to own the apex of 1960's Cadillac sedans, the 1966 Fleetwood Brougham is it. It is the only year that model received those broad walnut window friezes with the most luxurious interior that includes fold-down tables and footrest which began with the 1965 Fleetwood Brougham option on the 60 Special.

    Erskine?

The molding suggest to me it was a 1929 Nash Standard Six Series 420.
  14. Odd how a low windshield and top was acceptable on convertibles but not on closed cars of those times.

  17. The 1973 Chevelle two door was the first 'Chivvy' my step-grandfather Dutch, a confirmed 'Chivvy man" hated. He had had a succession of 'Chivvies" from the 1930's on through the 1967 Bel Air sedan which he loved. But 1973 was the year he retired from machinist work, my Grandmother Mildred, a forceful person, decided they needed only one car. He'd always kept an older car for work/commuting. Off they went to Ryan Chevrolet to look at what was on offer shortly before the 1974 models were introduced. Leftover was a solid maroon plain-jane Chevelle two door coupe, a come-down in every way from the pretty metallic turquoise 30K miles '67 Bel Air sedan they had. But six years was six years, so it was time to trade cars. It didn't take long for them to discover to their dismay how lousy that Chevelle 305 ran with all the crude pollution equipment, with multiple trips to the dealer to try and make it run without hesitation and stalling. Dutch was of the generation that always still wore a hat in public, could not enter or exit that Chevelle without knocking his hat off. Worst, no vent windows, fixed quarter windows and no A/C made the interior hot and stuffy all summer. But worst of all, the cheap thing had no drip molding around the door windows. On a rainy day, the moment one opened the door, it poured in wetting the driver like he'd pi$$ed his pants! I wished I could tell you some of the things he said about that Chevelle. He even thought about trading it back in for their '67 Bel Air sedan, he was so displeased with that '73. Unfortunately, the Bel Air was already sold so they ended up keeping that miserable Chevelle until trading it for a '80 Malibu, which wasn't much better.
  18. Marmon named this style "Longchamps". This Weymann body style was also called the "St. Cloud" on the Duesenberg J chassis. Note the fabric also covers the hood and its sides, which was Weymann's practice before they added the metal paneled option.
  19. The sedan appears to have been a 1931 Studebaker Commander Model 70 Brougham. The coupe makes me think 1928-'29 Dodge Senior Six though that's just a hunch.
