  1. This was the swan song of the Chrysler Windsor, long their most popular, best-selling model. The new interloper, the lower-priced '61 Newport stole the show, reducing Windsor sales by approximately 60%. The 300 Sport replaced the Windsor for 1962. This '61 Windsor does appear to be a hidden preserved original gem just awaiting the right person to reactivate and enjoy it. Hope it finds a new appreciative conservator. Frankly, after surveying the uniform, limited selection of cars that appears at every show and cruise night here, a '61 Chrysler Windsor in all its high-flying finned glory would be a breath of fresh air!
  2. Anyone interested in a Mark III should give this one serious consideration. Its condition is exceptional for the price, these are not an inexpensive car to restore from a tired example.

Note; NYS DMV has a provision to register antique cars with plates from the year of the car's model year. In this case, should another New York owner wish to continue to register this DeSoto with the 1951 plates, its possible to do so. The NYS DMV website describes the process for those interested in doing so.
  4. Was it as solid as it looks in the photo? A set of buckets and console would add a lot to this Mercury.
  5. Later in the 1940 model run, the club coupe style was added, 54 were built as the seller notes. These were much more hand-built bodies whereas 1941 and later used some low-volume dies to create sections of the bodies that were welded and lead finished.

  11. The first I ever encountered a Citroen was about 1961-'62 when I was nine. It had been traded in at our local small-town Ford dealership, probably an ID Series. It sat among the conservative, square Fords like a spaceship from Mars. Being a car-crazed youth, I had to have a look, all the features and details so unlike anything I had ever seen. It sat low on its suspension but the lower body rust was already evident. Norm Tunningley, the dealer, didn't have much to say about it other than it was "an oddball". Guesses are he took it in trade simply to make a deal but did not want to, had given the owner a low trade-in which they still happily accepted. Almost sixty years ago, parts and service were non-existent in rural small-towns for foreign cars like a Citroen.

  14. Mostly looks like a 3/4 scale Japanese 1965-'66 AMC Ambassador. Might be just as easy to find a righthand drive Ambassador with stick shift to restore and enjoy. There has to be one left somewhere, AMC pursued the rural free delivery fleet market then.

  16. JamesR The bold styling risk were the result of having the styling contract with Raymond Loewy Associates, who hired many of the most talented designers of the era including Bob Bourke, Virgil Exner and Gordon Buehrig. Loewy was always 'pushing the envelope' pursuing more modern designs and was able to sell management on building them. The technical problem of the 'rubber' frame was that Loewy was always pushing his "Weight is the Enemy" mantra. Excess weight, yes; adequate weight for strength sufficient to the job, no. Its a ladder frame that's only boxed in the front area, no X-member. I had a 1957 President Classic and the car does have a lightly-structured feel. They did increase the frame metal gage beginning in 1955 but still no X-member which it needed. Financially, Studebaker was in a downward spiral even before the dual 1953 body dies: antiquated, inefficient factories but especially labor cost that were out of control, adding 10-12% to the price of their cars versus the competition. Management took pride in the 'fact' that Studebaker had never taken a official strike (they'd had wildcat strikes). They had capitulated to what the union demanded each round, being a separate UAW chapter from those in Detroit. They were beyond its control, aggressively pursued more pay and easier standards, with which management went along. Packard was already in trouble before the merger idea jelled. It was one of the monumental debacles of automotive management history. Best characterized by two stumbling drunks holding each other up for a while.
  17. JamesR The 1953 Studebakers were the victim of management indecision and dithering. Originally, 1952, their centennial year, was to receive the all-new cars in the form of the Model N, of which styling photos and documents are known. These would have been conventionally-styled sedans etc. proportioned on the 116.5 inch wheelbase as is this Champion. Concurrent to the Model N development, Bob Bourke had been developing a blue-sky-design show car coupe with stunning proportions on the 120.5 inch wheelbase, without any intention it would become a production car. But, Loewy was aware of it and with some of the more receptive management, pushed to get the coupe into production. Problem was, some of the basic structural tooling for the Model N already in process. So, in spite of the completely different proportions, management wanted the coupe's styling features applied to the sedans, not a comfortable fit as you can see. As it turned out, Studebaker invested in two complete sets of body tooling dies for the 1953 lines: 116.5 inch wheelbase sedans plus the 120.5 inch wheelbase Land Cruiser, an extension of the sedan shell. The hardtop K-Body and the pillared coupe C-Body on the 120.5 inch wheelbase frame share little or nothing with the sedans. Now, Why the odd-looking false door cut-line on the 1953-'55 two door quarter panels: Once the four door sedan was developed, it was decided to tool a longer two door sedan front door and an insert quarter panel with window to fill the space that would be occupied by the four door rear door, all to save tooling money for a two door sedan-specific quarter panel set of dies. Results are what looks like a non-functional rear door. Yes, cheap and cheesy. For 1955, they managed to cover it with a big chromed airplane-form trim piece, still looked half-vast. Hope this isn't too risque for this forum, but Bob Bourke referred to the 1953-'54 Studebaker sedans frontal styling as "the droopy penis models".
  18. Its on page 152 in Fred Roe's book, credited to Willoughby, "apparently a one-off body, this car with unique moulding treatment has never been traced. Variations of this moulding arrangement appear on several Willoughby bodies on Packards and Pierce-Arrows.". It has the unusual molding that flies off from around the fender and wraps up around the rear of the body. Notes also that: " Hollywood actor Frank Morgan was photographed with the car for tire company endorsements."

Ransom Eli Olds founded the REO Motor Car Company in 1904 after leaving the Olds Motor Works Company (Oldsmobile) which he also founded. When he left Oldsmobile, he was precluded from using his name (Olds) for another auto company, so he chose to use his initials (REO). By the fall of 1904, the new company began producing its first vehicles. REO produced a variety of cars and trucks (Speed wagons) until 1936 when car production ceased due to the effects of the depression. One of REO's two most memorable cars is the REO Flying Cloud, introduced in 1927.The Flying Cloud was the first car to use Lockheed's new hydraulic internal expanding brake system and featured styling by Fabio Segardi. While Ned Jordan is credited with changing the way advertising was written with his "Somewhere West of Laramie" ads for his Jordan Playboy, REO's Flying Cloud——a name that provoked evocative images of speed and lightness——changed the way automobiles would be named in the future. 23. Simply conjecture, but as part of the British Empire, since white cars were acceptable in England, the custom was extended across the Empire. In equatorial countries or those where the climate was hotter, a white car would gather and retain less heat, something considered desirable to live around. Tinting pigments likely were available everywhere, though the durability under intense sun an issue.

  25. White was considered in the 1920's only appropriate for three types of vehicles: milk delivery trucks, ambulances and a child's hearse. All other were considered gauche. In the 1930's, light cream such as Packard Ivory, Cord's Cigarette Cream or Studebaker's Tulip Cream was acceptable but primarily for open body styles. By the advent of WWII, a sedan or coupe in light cream was acceptable. Taste and attitudes toward certain colors changed in that period almost as much as the styling.
