Carsnz123
A friend of mine is looking at buying this car. It is Registered as a 1929 Buick but I'm not so sure. He, not being schooled in the glorious ways of vintage cars, missed a few key details namely the style of the radiator. I'm wondering if it's been made up of Buick and Marquette bits as he said it has an OHV engine but internal drum brakes. It is not uncommon for cars here in NZ to be "restored" using parts from a couple different model years.
Spinneyhill
It looks to have a Marquette body, bonnet, and radiator surround. The instrument panel also looks like a Marquette. Marquette was a Buick sub-make, wasn't it?
Carsnz123
Companion marque. GMs "A car for every purse and purpose" scheme.
John_S_in_Penna
I agree with Carsnz. It was not considered a Buick at all. Offering a "companion" car was a popular trend in the 1920s. Just as your companion is a person separate from you, so were the companion cars separate makes, or marques. Oakland brought out the Pontiac; Oldsmobile brought out the Viking; Buick brought out the Marquette; Cadillac brought out the LaSalle. In other companies, Marmon brought out the Roosevelt; Studebaker brought out the Erskine, and later the Rockne; Reo brought out the Wolverine; Hudson brought out the Terraplane; etc.
Marquette Flyer
I believe all the Marquettes built in North America were flatheads. The car you show looks like a Marquette to me!
Bloo
Was the Marquette flathead engine unique to Marquette?
Marquette Flyer
As I understand, the block is Oldsmobile. I did find when tearing mine down, the connecting rods are Buick. I have yet to find out what everything else is. I'm currently trying to find some rings. I found one vendor asking $150 for a set... I'll keep looking.
