First "SUPER-HIGHWAY" in the nation opened October 1, 1940.  This article has  25 really neat old photos.  Notice some of the old tunnels had only one tube, with one lane in each direction and no barrier.  Several of the tunnels were actually for the Southern Penn Railroad, abandoned many years earlier.

Now, some of those tunnels are abandoned since 1982, and attract hikers and bikers.  http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/ind...nia_tur_1.html -636918efaa081b54.JPG

First super highway in the world if I remember correct! They just finished redoing the last of the service plazas... If only they could do something about getting ride of their happily named "orange improvement areas".

Isn't the PA Turnpike the one that charges you a dollar for every year it's been open? It's EXPENSIVE!

When it first opened it was a penny a mile; considering the cost of construction at that time was just over $1,000,000 per mile, quite a deal!
