  • Driven 120,000 miles

This is a 1959 Thunderbird convertible 352 V8 300 hp three speed automatic, power steering, power brakes and optional factory continental kit.

  • I bought this car from an Estate Sale and I have her engine running great & trans shifting. l haven’t messed with the brakes yet.

Car seems to be priced reasonably given the work that needs to be done. Need to check closely underneath for any rust issues. Interior looks strange to me and I can’t see the black and turquoise color combination listed in the Ford 1949 to 1959 parts book and looks a little tired. I think it would look better with seats having turquoise bolsters and white inserts. Even if it was ordered from the factory, the continental kit does not do much for the looks of the car. I guess it is trying to capture some of the magic of the 1956 Thunderbird.

Interestingly 1958-59 Thunderbird convertibles have what might be called a manual top.

Everyone is familiar with the push one button top operation on Skyliners and Lincoln convertibles.

On a 58-9 Bird to lower the top you stop and put it in park. Reach for the top of the windshield and release the two top clamps. Then you push the (locking) remote trunk release button below the dash and get out of the car.

The trunk release button energized two solenoids that allowed the deck lid to pop up a couple of inches.

Standing by the quarter panel you push in the secondary release. (Identical to a hood latch) and lift the (counter balanced) deck lid.

Now reach up and pull the spring loaded pin and flip over the “boot flap” that was folded under the deck lid. Release the pin to lock the flap in place.

Next you reach inside the trunk, find the hydraulic pump switch on the side panel and the hydraulic motor moves the top linkage into the trunk.
When the top is fully retracted into the trunk, then you push down and slam the deck lid the same way you would close the hood.

Then you are ready to get back behind the wheel and enjoy top down motoring.

More trouble than just holding down one switch but there’s very little to go wrong and leave you stranded with a stuck top.

The fully automatic top would come along for Thunderbird in 1960.

1960 to 1966 - Thunderbirds always required you to release the top from the windshield where as in a Lincoln that action was part of the automatic sequence.

I really like thunderbirds, and compared to cars of their same year I think most are underrated. This car style wise is much nicer than a lot of other 1959 cars. This old guy looks pretty tired around the edges though. I think the asking is high for whats there.

I agree. But if it's really good underneath and doesn't need major engine/ powertrain work I could see $9000. I know of a really minty nice one for $23,000 needing nothing. It's been for sale for over a year and still not sold.

I'm pretty easy to get along with but the interior colors in this car are beyond me. I don't think Duncan would put those colors on a Yoyo.

This car does not seem to have any major problems, other than the brakes, side glass, top, and tires, (which would still be a good chunk of change.) Probably some sort of paint job, and voila, A pretty glamorous droptop T-bird! I like these cars (always have.) The new price is very tempting.
