Fender skirts - When did it start?

Industry wide in the USA they appeared in accessory catalogs issued by the factory as "authorized" accessories starting in late 1933 for the 1934 cars - earliest I have seen anyway. Perhaps were used in Europe at Salons ( Automobile shows) or on land speed record attempt cars.  That can be sorted more defined with time to look in the periodicals of the era like Omnia, La Carrosserie, Motor Body Building. Cooper's Vehicle Journal  etc.

One of the earliest shown at the Custom Salons was the 1928 Franklin Pirate sport sedan by Dietrich.  This photo was posted by Walt G on the Pre-War Photos topic he instituted to keep us all sane in a crazy time.  Public interest in airplanes and flying since 'Lucky Lindy's' triumphant flight was simply all the rage at the time.

Just a fast Wikipedia search produced this,

First described as "pants", they were used for the streamlining effect by Frank Lockhart on a 1928 Stutz land speed record attempt car. Factory production of fender skirts began with the 1932 Graham-Paige. Aesthetically streamlined designs were copied to mass-produced models.

In England, they're called 'spats'.
