Stamm
Does anyone know what the fix might be?
edinmass
It can be caused by several issues. It’s one of those if you have to ask questions it’s probably best to bring it to someone who is familiar with them. 1- Bad shifting shaft detent spring or ball in the transmission top cover. 2-Bad shift lever spring if the car uses one. 3-Bent or damaged shifting fork. 4- Worn shaft or bushing causing it to pop out of position. 5-Bad bearing……unlikely but possible. Obviously parts are not available, so even if you find the issue you must be prepared to make what you need. Look for a good used transmission before you tear it apart. The problems most likely start from the top and go in descending order. If you pull the trans, do the clutch also. I can’t remember if the Packard is a drive shaft or torque tube…….torque tubes add a bit more to the time.
DonMicheletti
In my personal experience, that problem has always been associated with a bad input bearing, or related to the bearing.
Stamm
Could I tell if it is the bearing by just removing the trans top and trying to wiggle the shaft?
edinmass
Pull the top cover, and check the springs and detent balls……probably a 70 percent chance that is all it is. You usually see them jumping out of second, and third is a bit more unusual. I have fixed a dozen cars jumping out of gear, and only one needed to have the unit pulled and dig deep inside. Most likely you can get it done with just the cover.
Stamm
Thanks. That was my thinking also, but wanted some other opinions. Have a show I want to attend and then some planned vacation before I can proceed. Will let you know the results when I can
Stamm
I am guessing a weak spring. What do you do for a stronger one?
DFeeney
Perhaps you might be able to put a little flat washer under one end of the spring.

Jubilee
Floor shift- there’s always the old forked board on shift lever to dash trick.
