1934 packard conv cpe. Jumps out of high gear on deceleration

It can be caused by several issues.  It’s one of those if you have to ask questions it’s probably best to bring it to someone who is familiar with them.

1- Bad shifting shaft detent spring or ball in the transmission top cover.

2-Bad shift lever spring if the car uses one.

3-Bent or damaged shifting fork.

4- Worn shaft or bushing causing it to pop out of position.

5-Bad bearing……unlikely but possible.

Obviously parts are not available, so even if you find the issue you must be prepared to make what you need. Look for a good used transmission before you tear it apart. The problems most likely start from the top and go in descending order. If you pull the trans, do the clutch also. I can’t remember if the Packard is a drive shaft or torque tube…….torque tubes add a bit more to the time.

Pull the top cover, and check the springs and detent balls……probably a 70 percent chance that is all it is. You usually see them jumping out of second, and third is a bit more unusual. I have fixed a dozen cars jumping out of gear, and only one needed to have the unit pulled and dig deep inside. Most likely you can get it done with just the cover.
