rjp
Alot of cars had them you put the peddle down and it would "dump" the exhaust . it was befor the muffle. Some would use it for noise and some for compression release. I did not know if each car manufacturer had their own or if you could buy them off the shelf. I have 5 or 6 and was going to sell them but, want to keep 1 for my studebaker mine are all different Thanks
studeboy
I believe the period correct term is exhaust cutout. They are still used on race cars sometimes.
alsancle
Duesenburg model J had something called Town & Country exhaust. The cars with outside pipes additionally had complete cut out. DuPont also had an optional exhaust cut out. Phantom II RR had an optional “continental” exhaust setting which was a cutout. Those are the three cars from the 20s and 30s that I know came with the factory exhaust cut out. I think them anymore in the teens.
edinmass
Lots of cars had cut outs. They quickly faded from most cars my the early 20’s. Packard offered cars with them till 1930.
