Added bonus is the weather forecast for this weekend

Goods news..........the weather will be nice I should get lots of work done.

Bads news...... I was informed yesterday it will not be concrete.....as i was the only person wanting concrete this weekend, and 2 of the 4 concrete truck drivers were not available, it is a no go. But it looks like it will get done the end of next week, depending on the weather...Wed, Thurs, or Friday. The fun part of dealing with the place my son works, I am at their mercy of them fitting me in, I just have to remember the price is right and be happy when it does get done.

With the fall weather moving in and it being dark before 7pm it is hard to get much work done when I don't get home from work till 5. It took me a couple of evenings to get all the metal done around the garage doors. Now I need to get back on that porch so I can get the metal and trim on it so can get to the west wall this weekend and get that done.

Looking good,,, I like the exterior colors.  I don't remember if you stated the dimensions of your garage, but it looks a little bigger than my Cape Cod style house (24'X32')!

Thanks dship... it is not easy picking colours as you just don't always now how things are going to look when you finally get them put up and covering a large area. Then to see how it goes with your house also. I should get a pic that includes my house and post it in the near future.

Burgundy was my original choice for the top colour, but when I was ordering the metal the guy discouraged me from the that colour as he had had complaints from other people as the burgandy in the sun appears purple and brown and not as it looks when you have it on your computer screen. He did give me a swatch of the colour that he had to take home so I could see for myself. The colour of choice is just called "Dark Red" and I am happy with the choice.

While dodging the rain last week I managed to get all the strapping on the roof and Saturday was hoping to get all the roofing installed. You will notice that in these pictures I have not done the soffit and facia and that is because I have run out of the charcoal J channel. Between when I order material in May and now I seem to have changed my mind about the way I was going to do something and I do not have enough of the charcoal J channel but it looks like I will have about 7 or 8 pcs of red J channel left over. I need to order some this week.

First thing to install was the drip edge around the front and the capping on the side.

Next up was the metal roof on the short side. I installed these panels backward to have a clean full edge on the outside and not the shorter overlapping cap edge on the outside. This way I could also use buttel tape to seal the outside edge with the small flat on the steel panel. It also looks neater this way if you are not using a full roof cap on the outside edge to cover the ends.

Front done.

The last 2 thing was to add the flashing at the wall and the ridge cap. I will have to go back a redo the ridge cap seal, I did not have the right stuff and what I tried to do did not work. But that is for a later time.

On Sunday with the weather still good I thought I better get the caulking done at the windows and the garage doors so that it will dry properly. I spent an hr or more doing some clean up and putting stuff away which seems to be a never ending job as I try my best to keep things as neat and tidy as possible during this garage construction. I also cut and mounted the wood in front of the door openings for my concrete.

Sunday afternoon I tackled the trim work around the underside of the porch. I have to admit I have enjoyed doing the trim work, it is a bit slow and time consuming at times but when it is done and the the paneling is installed it just seems to improve the fit and finish when done. I had mentioned back at the beginning of this thread I went and look at a few finished garages/barns and I was not very impressed with the finishing details that I saw and most of the issues was the lack of trim work and just not caring enough to do a good job with it. I guess that is the difference sometime when you are doing it for yourself or paying a company who it trying to build 10 or more buildings in a year and have 2 or 3 going on at the same time.

Your shop is really going to be the cream of the crop. It's going to look great! I worked for a siding company for several years and I know exactly how time consuming installing the J-channel can be. Once all the trimming is done, the siding goes fast.

That heated floor is the killer for me. That is going to be so nice in the winter. You're really doing a good job and I hope you enjoy it. I want to see pics of the car projects you will be doing later.

Man,you ain't playing around with the concrete! Where I live,I'd have a few buddies with wheel barrows and concrete rakes pulling the concrete by hand in the rear of the garage. We would put the chute off the truck as far as it would go in and pull it the rest of the way. Then screed it with a 2X4 and smooth it with a bull float. Finally finish it with a circular gasoline powered finisher. I wouldn't know how to act with back-saving equipment such as you are using.

It's looking great!

I need to back track a little bit here as I skipped some steps with the live concrete news feed last week. Prior to concrete I was working on the trim around the porch and below is how the the finish looked turned out with the metal installed. I was able to do a 1 pc sheet all cut to go around everything and up above the porch roof. I was pleasantly surprised how flexible the metal was to be able to manipulate it to go around all the obstacles.

That's a good example of DIY craftsmanship vs. what would otherwise result when work is done for hire by 'professionals'.  When it's your building and you will pass by that spot every day you're more likely to think through the final result.  Of course, it helps that your time is essentially 'free'...  ;)

Garage looks great. Colors are nice………my only comment would be to seal the concrete. It’s now or never. Also, having a decent size concrete pad outside is important. I skipped it on my build and came back later to do it. I did 20x25 but wish it was larger. Working on equipment and trailers outside is much easier.

I am kind of at the point of just having some small project to do so last week I put the snow guard up on the back side of the building. I still have the front to do. This is a good weekday project with it getting dark so early and don't really need to get any tools set up to do this,,,just a drill and screws.

You have me thinking Ed....Under my porch I was going to pour concrete in a couple of yrs after the ground is all settled but I think the idea of have a bigger pad might be a great idea, I might look into extending the pad and having a larger area done. Now how do I get this past the wife....hmmmmm

In the pic below I would extend to where the camper trailer is and one of my kids cars....that would make a great outdoor work area. I have already set that area up for parking with stone put down.

Just tell you wife that I said it was “OK”, and that I insisted you do it. Put all the weight on my shoulders! 👍

Blame Ed as well when you extend the in floor heating into the outside pad.  Added bonus of a large pad outside is it's a great place to wash cars/trucks/equipment .  You can climb in and out of them without tracking dirt into the interior and it keeps the moisture out of the shop.

Yes, and one step further - I'm seriously thinking about a pad in front of my pole barn so that I can push my 4-post lift out there to powerwash the underside of my vehicles, or other dirty jobs that I don't want fouling my garage.  I currently have a 3-foot apron in front of my doors, which doesn't sound like much, but is really handy.  I'd do that as a minimum.  Maybe carry the entryway pad straight across the front, even if you decide to wait on the full-size pad.

I added the pad outside of our shop so I could roll the lift out and power wash the bottom of our cars. Five years in and last week was the first time I had to take advantage of the lift outside. Just remember you need a hose, an air jack, and a power jack outside also. I put my 220 plug by the door so we can weld in an emergency.
