Were these built specifically for the PT boats or were they based on an earlier, car-designed V-12?

At 2,490 Cubic Inches, it would be one heck of an auto engine. There is some similarity to the Packard built Liberty of WWI (designed in conjunction with Elbert Hall of Hall-Scott) but it's basically a new design.
