John McEwan
I’ve finally got my ‘23 engine back together except for the head after resleeving etc. It’s ready for paint (2 pak thanks to Matt) My query is if I paint the head and head nuts after tensioning down, do two or three heat cycles then re tension, how do I not mess up the beautiful new paint on the nuts and area around the nuts? Maybe not paint those areas and touch up after?
Mattml430
You could swap them out for unpainted ones, 1 at a time maybe. I used stainless steel acorn nuts on mine with a hardened washer.
JFranklin
Touch up after torquing is the easiest. I sometimes use motor oil or gear lube between the nut and tool as a cushion if I don't want to do any touch up. Usually I just don't care, it's just a car after all.

Mark Gregush
Why would you paint them after installing, anyway? Wouldn't they have been cad plated or such?
jpage
I believe that, with the exception of Ford, that most production engines were painted as a whole unit after assembly. As for your question, do what is easiest for you! Edited December 23, 2021 by jpage (see edit history)
