Restorer32
When and what was the last automobile produced with mechanical brakes only ? I have a candidate for this honor but will wait to see what answers others offer.
Guest
The last of the "Big Three" was Ford,1938.
DizzyDale
Good Question,I am sure there must have been some foreign mongrel that had mechanical brakes well into the 50s.diz :
Guest BruceW
I may be wrong but ...I understand that Crosley automobiles had mechanical brakes until 1948 then started using hydraulics in 1949.
1937hd45
OH so close Wayne! Crosley was the first with DISK brakes.
ply33
I believe that the first imported VW Beetles (1949ish) had cable actuated front brakes. No too sure about it though...
Restorer32
TodFitch wins a prize! Not sure if it was the last so equipped but we have a '49 VW in the shop with 4 wheel mechanicals. Of course with that 25 horse engine mechanicals were probably almost adequate.
Guest BruceW
From the information I have....the mechanical brakes on the VW were used until 1949 and were replaced with hydraulic brakes in 1950. Porsche continued to use mechanical brakes on its stripped down 356 speedster until 1951 when hydraulic brakes were finally used.
Guest
Why did I think MG might have been in there somewhere? Just curious.hvs
Guest BruceW
I believe MG started using hydraulic brakes in 1935.
Guest
I believe that Bugattis used mechanical brakes later than many other makers.
Guest
Bentley used mechanical rear, hydraulic front until 1955. The rears worked off of a servo on the transmission. Odd system.
nearchoclatetown
i think vw used mechanical brakes until at least 1960 on the standard model.
1937hd45
Howard my 1948 MG-TC has hydraulic brakes, copper lines (original) that came from the factory with a protective coil around them. This could look like a cable at quick glance. Bugatti switched to hydraulic brakes during the Type 57 model run in the mid 1930's.
