Fit and finish showed class and breeding.  Glitz and accessories were not required.  It was only when the "common people" were able to afford vehicles that glitz seemed necessary to some.  IMHO

So that was probably about the time when "common people" could afford a Duesenberg?

The original car pictured has no cowl vent so later than 1918-19,probably 22-23.

I must be old and tired,car in original picture has a cowl vent so it's later than 18-19.

Thanks sagefinds. This may or may not help, but the still is from the silent movie "The Kid" 1921, (Charlie Chaplan, Edna Purviance). Pic was shot in front of Mary Pickford's then home at 55 Fremont Place, Los Angeles.

So, was this Cadillac simply called a Cadillac Town Car?

Cadillac didn't make town cars themselves but would sell a car or just a chassis to body builders and they would build their own. Judkins built some,Durham built some and called theirs a town Cabriolet,probably to make it sound a little classier. The car in Layden's picture would have been a year that had a cowl vent and lights according to the headlights. Since it doesn't have any,and even the windshield is not Cad,it most likely was built from a chassis with a bare cowl ordered that way from the factory. The car in your picture and Layden's could very well be the same year.

Perhaps Layden's is a year or two newer. The line from the radiator to the windshield is a straight line. With Greg's Cadillac, the cowl curves up to meet the windshield.   -   Carl
