muffler paint?

I got a n.o.s. muffler today for my 35 Buick. It looks to be in good shape except for a lot of surface rust. Should I paint it with high temp engine paint or maby exhaust manifold paint? Thanks,Greg.

sure, but you do realize it will eventually rust again anyway?

i cleaned mine up and put put in the High Temp Primer and Paint from KBS for my 1929, will see how it holds up, but for now it looks great !!  it is a flat black NOT a shiny black that i used. did the entiure exhaust pipe, muffler, etc...

Here's the big question, are you going to drive it or show it?

 

Spent several hundred hours under cars at a custom exhaust shop and if all you want to do is make the old stock muffler look as good as the new pipe, go to the nearest Walmart and get the cheapest rattle can of aluminum or silver paint on the shelf and spray it.

I used Bill Hirsch hi-temp a looong time ago. Still looks good.

Years ago I put a new Walker exhaust system on a 1970 pickup truck. But before I did, I put on 2 coats of aluminum stove pipe paint I happened to have in the garage. Ten years later when I got rid of the truck the exhaust was pristine, no rust at all. The first 2 feet or so was darkened by heat but not rusty.

Today there are many better high temp paints. I would definitely rub it down with steel wool and paint it with high temp paint. At least 2 coats, 3 if you have time.
