Mssr. Bwatoe
Hi gang, I need to repair my balancer, the weight spins on the unit, I recall an article in TWOTZ about repairing...can anyone chime in on the direction.==the plates are sandwiched between fiber washer as seen in pic pt 06h-6366 like an automatic trans mission clutch plate, but for no metal lining--probably some form of cork? hey 40 Tom !! Ken/Alabama
I've rebuilt a couple of those. Best I remember I made some new fiber washers from some gasket gasket material but not cork. I think cork might be too soft. Edited April 30, 2019 by Ken/Alabama (see edit history)
Michael L.
Are those little c clips hard to get off in order to disassemble this balancer? Mike L.
38ShortopConv.
Yes, can be. Hold the unit in a vice, carefully. Just press the ring thing down against the spring pressure with a fork arrangement and flick the horse shoe clip out.. Try not to loose sight of where the clip ends up. Good luck! gdcont
Hi guys. What is the symptoms of a faulty balancer? I have an engine vibration on deceleration but no engine misfire and plenty of power. Thank you for any suggestions, George
Mssr. Bwatoe
Look at engine mounts, sagged settled old motor mounts.....My balancer weight is loose, spins free... I dont know what happened..still drives fine/
Michael L.
Thanks for the advice on how to separate the plates. Mike L.
gdcont
I was thinking about the engine mounts. I replaced them maybe 15 years ago with rebuilt ones from Richard Hommel. I wasn't sure of the quality of them at the time. I'll check mine out if it ever stops raining here in the northeast. Thank you for the reply, George. Mssr. Bwatoe
I'm glad you mentioned that, we have a problem, with mount availability, I suspect sagged motor mounts that allow the metal inside to rest on the inner shell is a source of a lot of Lincolns that sound like a truck inside..Do you have a good source for them, I think mine were made by Warren Rice 45 years ago!! I would renew them in a second if they were done well..
Mssr. Bwatoe
Hey Ken, Did you paint the inner side of the balance plates??

I did but not in the recess where the fiber washers go and also keep paint out of the holes for the pins and springs.
abelincoln
If you want improved performance, have a hub machined to mount the crank pulley, and use a Chevy balancer. GM balancer needs to be honed a bit to fit. You then need to fab a fan adapter, or go with electric fans. Not stock, but would take a careful eye to tell the difference. 38ShortopConv.
Abe, What year Chevy balancer? Roy
abelincoln
Its an old Ford trick. 6-6 1/4 balancer was stock on 283, 327, and others. Check the old Ford sites and HAMB for how to's.
38ShortopConv.
Thanks, my harmonic balancer on V12 is doing fine, was just curious, thought the Chevy balancer may have been from a 1930s 6 cyl. Chevy. All good.
Mssr. Bwatoe
I have never seen one bad before, and I suspect I caused it though a overzealous heavy thick paint job that gummed up the springs, which reduced the tension and allowed the plates to slip....ok now..But what a pain to remove / repair.. 38ShortopConv.
Yes, the two large spring loaded flanges are designed to slip around the main shaft boss to smooth out any minor vibrations. Can be a trap if you have timing marks on flanges!
DSpringer
I've always been curious about the balancers. What vibrations are they designed to dampen? From the fan?
38ShortopConv.
Im no expert but I have seen them refered to as a "Harmonic" balancer. Smooth out any ripples / vibrations flowing along the crankshaft !? Edited July 5, 2019 by 38ShortopConv. (see edit history)
