Do you happen to remember the cost Dave? Now for the 38? And pardon my total ignorance of 6 volt systems but can a jump starter be used on a 6 volt? 1939_Buick
1938 is probably the same http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/SSB5/3EH/N0369.oap?ck=Search_N0369_-1_-1&pt=N0369&ppt=C0327 http://www.continentalbattery.com/products/236 http://www.restorationbattery.com/gmproducts.html Do you want to use a 12volt to jump start a 6 volt car? Starter motor will be OK if used for a short time. but other electrics, like gauges, may smoke with 12volts! Others will have more experience http://forums.aaca.org/topic/264877-whats-the-beststongest-6-volt-battery-on-the-market/

And I do not HOOK up the last connection on the 12 volt, I just make connection with it. Barney Eaton
I know it is not stock but I switched to Optima in my '39 and it cost $114 via the internet. I was using the stock, big, long, heavy battery and they lasted about a year. They were so heavy I had to ask the wife to put them in for me. To attempt to hid the bright red top on the Optima, I found a cheap black plastic trash can and modified it as a cover. The Optima spins the 320 like a champ.
