Smartin
Hmmm...it's impossible to diagnose something like this without an actual sound clip. It could be anything. Worst case is a spun bearing.

Easy cheap ideas first! Air cleaner same. Loose adj on carb choke spring/ missing spring. Bad bearing alt. or clutch on fan/ loose bolts. Stretched timing chain rubbing inside timming cover. Does anyone else riding in car hear the same noise, hmmm? Just kidding! I was given an inexpensive steathascope from Harbor freight, might "localize" noise more easily for you to ID source. JohnD1956
Throw-out bearing? I know you said no heat shield on the car, so that means the starter heat shield and the thermostatic stove for the Air cleaner on the drivers side exhaust manifold have been removed? mll1446
has headers other people in car can hear it,
NTX5467
IF the noise is a timing chain hitting the cover, it's probably getting ready to "jump a tooth"! Might it be something in the shift linkage? What part of the vehicle does it sound like it's coming from? Acceleration (light, mod, heavy), load (cruise, idle, coasting), smooth road or otherwise? Got to be a harmonic somewhere! NTX5467
mll1446
sounds like comes from the right side of the car while driving you know rpm's at 2300 sounds like a loose rattle almost like a heatshield or exhaust leak
