Guest Liz Kerr Posted February 11, 2014 Share Posted February 11, 2014 Hi allmy name is Liz Kerr and I live with my better half , 2 buicks, 2 Edsels and 7 dogs in rural kent uk. We have recently bought a 1955 Buick special with a dynaflow gearbox. The car is in great shApe but only goes in forward gear. In reverse it also goes forward.sadly my better half is now in poor health so cannot tackle the job of investigating it himself. We have several good friends and they have had tried adjusting the bands through a hole in the floor ( which apparently the adjustment screw is located.We are currently looking at getting the gearbox repaired but as you can imagine specialists in dynaflow gearboxes are few and far between in the UK .I wondered if anyone else has had this problem. Also we have been advised that the box is not interchangeable with any other model or year, but wondered if anyone else knows any different. TexasJohn55 Posted February 12, 2014 Share Posted February 12, 2014 The 56 dynaflow will fit but is 1" longer and requires modification of the crossmember to shift everything 1" to the rear. Fr. Buick Posted February 12, 2014 Share Posted February 12, 2014 Don't go rebuilding anything until you have changed engine mounts, thrust pad and trans mount. These will greatly impact how the trans behaves. Once these are changed, adjust your linkage, as Willie said above. I bet this will fix your problem. d2_willys Posted February 12, 2014 Share Posted February 12, 2014 Perhaps the Reverse band is either warn or out of adjustment and might even have a bad servo seal. jackofalltrades70 Posted February 13, 2014 Share Posted February 13, 2014 This is gonna sound real dumb, but you are shifting all the way down for reverse? Not just one notch from Park? If the car is up on jackstands and it is in neutral, it will spin the wheels. Reverse is all the way down, like where low gear is on newer transmissions.
