John Gelfer
Any advice on cleaning varnish deposits left from eight years of old gasoline sitting in a tank? I'm hoping I don't have to remove it to do it properly. Would POR 15 Marine Clean work? I saw it online, and wondered if it was the right stuff. I know enough to avoid corrosives like muriatic acid. Thanks
DizzyDale
Dear John,If it was MY tank i would remove and have it steamed out at a radiator shop, then coated with a product that Bill Hirsch sells to seal up the interior.Do it right once and cross it off the to do list.diz
Twitch
I agree with Diz. The money and time you'll spend with do-it-yourself stuff is just a waste. You don't try to copy professional radiator cleaning/repairing so why the gas tank?http://www.gastankrenu.com/ LIFETIME guarantee!! There's 2 places in Indiana, 1 in Chicago, 1 in Bloomington and closest in Rockford, IL.

DizzyDale
Dear John,Bill Hirsch,1-800-828-2061,Eastern time.Super gas tank sealer ,one quart,25.00, will seal a 30 gallon tank.diz
JFranklin
Make sure any coating you put in the tank will hold up to the new gasoline formulas. Might save a lot of grief in the future as more alchohol is added to the mix. If all you need to do is clean the tank don't use a sealer anyway it wouldn't be needed. nearchoclatetown
I agree with JFranklin. Tanks were not sealed from the factory. Clean it out, get rid of the rust and keep fresh gas in it.
nospark
One problem some of the bio-diesel fellows are having is putting vegetable oil into an old diesel tank. The diesel use has left behind a lot of gunck and the vegetable oil cleans it up too good. A hundred miles and 3 fuel filters later the tank is spic and span.I usually seal my tanks with an epoxy primer. nothing seems to touch it.Cheers. Bhigdog
I agree with both Franklin and Choclate. After cleaning if it's rusty coat it with 2 coats of Hirsch sealer, if it's not at all rusty leave it be. Hirsch claims his coating is alcohol safe............Bob
