sean1997
For 1956 and earlier Buicks the car and engine serial number do not match, so the only way to prove the original engine is a paperwork trail going back to the original sale. Some states used the engine serial number as the "VIN" on the title, so you might be able to use that. At the very least, the engine number should start with the letter V, then be a sequential number in the range of 2001 to 273955, and the last number of the engine serial number should be a 5 indicating Series 50. 1953mack
.....I have a 1953 Buick super, vin inside door is 17192251.....How can I find out if the engine number is the original.....Also, it is green, but the paint number says blue? thanks if someone can decodeMy understanding is that Buick records for the 1953 production year run from the seven assembly plants with owner's names, VINs, and Engine Serial Numbers (ESN) were destroyed and nowhere to be found. According to available Buick data out there and after doing an independent, thorough, and comprehensive government-style research (okay, call it anybody's guess), you should have a very late 1953 ESN based on the following:1953 production run began in November 1952, VIN's started at.....................6,740,001Buick built the total number of Specials with Straight Eight engines..................217,674Buick built the total number of Supers/Roadmasters with the V-8 engine...........271,131Adding everything up, the last (?) VIN at end of production, October 1953.....7,228,806Your VIN of 7,192,251 means that, in a perfect situation, and IF all lower VIN's were used up to that point (debatable), there were 36,555 Buick's made after yours (< 8%) before the 1953 production year run ended. There were 271,955 ESN's allocated for the 271,131 Super and Roadmaster Series built if you count engines for the stripped chassis', plus extras: #2001 through #273,955.My best guess: your ESN should be somewhere close to #250,000 or higher. The stamped number on the engine block's machined surface, driver's (left) side, between the middle branches of the exhaust manifold, should read somewhere close to V2500005 if the engine is the original engine. The suffix, last digit noted as "5" that follows the ESN, denotes the engine was originally installed in a new Super 50 Series Buick, also mentioned in Post #6 (edited) above. How close am I?In reference to your paint color question, Tyler Blue has a green tint to it and is definitely a blue-green color that looks close to the picture of your Buick. Tough to come up with a definitive color match comparison just from pictures though. PONTIAC1953
I don't know if buick did things differently than Pontiac did in 1953, but on every Pontiac six or eight cylinder engine blocks, there were two number pads, one had the engine numbers stamped, the other pad had the vin numbers stamped, even my 1955 Pontiac 287 strato streak V8 engine block has it's original car's vin numbers stamped on the front face of the engine block.
