Interesting info, to be sure! Myths/wive's tales do have a persistence factor. I guess what may be said is that ZDDP levels of between 801-1,200 PPM won't hurt when used in pre '80 vehicles?

Good news on the distributor.
I know it is the negative that gets all the press, but I sure see/read a lot of negative stuff on the Petronix. The complainers far outweigh the praisers!

@D Yaros- I'll check out that site right now! Thanks for the link
I spent HOURS on the site today. There is a whole lot of interesting info, and links. Unfortunately, it does take a whole lot of time and patience to dig it all out. Still, a very good site for one just getting into the old car hobby.

A trick I stumbled upon to fill the carb bowl is to use a ketchup squeeze bottle applied to the carb fuel bowl vent nozzle(s); the chamfered tube at the top of the car throat. Works every time!

I think I'm going to use a composite gasket - what say the crowd, neoprene or composite?
Glad you liked the sewing thread idea. Has always worked for me.
As to the "what say", I opt for composite.

College? Seems the last info I had was that he had yet to get his driver license? It cannot have been that long?
Yes, continued maintenance of enthusiasm is a real problem. Sometimes, it is just best to take a short break.
I concur on dumping the Petronix and going back to what Olds knew worked in terms of the distributor.

Sounds as though you had more than a good time at Hershey. Makes me want to go. Kudos to mom are in order, too!
I ran across an interesting web site, and thought of you when I did. It appears to have a lot of interesting info on the very subject(s) in which you are interested. Check it out - Table Of Contents For Autorevival.com
All may be interested in knowing the site has both a Casting Nr. and RPO decoder.

Whenever I have to replace gaskets (valve cover, oil pan, etc.) I always tie them in place with sewing thread. Keeps 'em from slipping during install!

Sounds like an air leak somewhere? Would be strange that air may be able to be sucked in, causing the noise, but fuel does not leak out? Strange, but not out of the realm of probability.
I would check the tightness of all screws in the carburetor air horn.

Hey, I am into Oldsmobile myself. I will not hold it against you that you like Buick!
When I was where you are now, my study hall period in high school was spent devouring a tome titled, Glenn's Auto Repair Manual. Believe it or not, I learned quite a lot doing so.
Welcome to the hobby, and the the AACA Forum!

I believe that Terrill Machine, out of DeLeon, TX will rebuild it for you? Google the name for Ph/Address.
I had them rebuild by distributor vacuum advance on my '55 Cad, and have no hesitation in recommending them.

Welcome to AACA! If you have been to Volo, you must be close. Where are you located? I am in SE WI

Interesting? Glad you got it all figured out and are able to now proceed in a more normal fashion. Thanks for letting us know the cause/solution.

Richard need's to learn what auction's NOT to go to. Come-on...Auburn! with that car. right year...wrong parade,
My thoughts, precisely!

I suspect the original paint was enamel? Sounds about right for that vintage. Perhaps a chem dip process is in order?

Well Glenn, I can tell you that I own a '55 Cadillac Coupe deVille, and did own a 1963 Corvair Monza. The Monza continually presented electrical problems. The Cad has not presented any?

Microsoft Paint, eh? I see the shield w/o any need for manipulation. Now, as for a "diagonal slash," or an "8;" well? Your efforts are appreciated, by me and many others, I am sure!

On the '55 Cadillac (a GM product) the VIN (engine #) is stamped on the frame on the passenger side top rail, just below the exhaust manifold. As cars age, the number becomes progressively harder to discern, but it is there.

In my travels around the net, especially looking /for at Olds material, one impression that stands out to me is how affordable the early Toronados are today.

The car on the left is also very interesting. The badge may have a digit 8 on it? Also difficult to tell, but is there a stub axle just behind the number plate or is it a sliding damper? Looks cca 1933 -1935 and the coupe body does have an European feel? Marchal pattern headlights?
I regularly peruse this section and read the messages. Natch, I know nothing whatsoever about these old rides. That is why I only peruse.
I am constantly amazed at the detail you guys are able to discern in these photos. For instance, in the picture that started this thread, the only 8 is see is the first digit on the license plate. Where is there, potentially, another?
What are you guys using to get such detail?

Thanks a bunch! Finally, the type of info I have been seeking for what seems to be forever! Appreciate it!

I thought I saw them available from Fusick? Have you checked there?
How is that ride coming together?
