The Olds FSM is, shall we say, more than a bit sparse when it comes to info on the standard trans. There is in a fact a section on the "Synchro-Mesh" transmission. No specs of any kind. Hardly a page or two.

Glass install is not a job for the timid. Errors are costly!

You might want to touch base with the folks in the Cad-LaSalle Club about this ride? Am sure they can help you uncover the history of it.

Well, the 6-bolt tranny in my 1960 Olds was connected to a 394 c.i. engine, putting out 315 h.p and 435 lbs. of torque. As for being indestructible, I can state I had to replace the sychronizer for 2nd gear more than once! But then I was, shall we say, pushing the drive train to its limits!
Still hoping someone can direct me to online info, manual, specs, etc. for this tranny.

I like it!

There was to be a program entitled Reality Rides that did deal with "proper restoration;" or so I am led to believe. While the show is available on CD, it never made it on the air, or if it did, it sure did not last. Anyone know anything about it?

I track a lot of vehicle info: repairs, gas mileage, purchases, etc. I use a program called Vehicle Record System. I have used it for years, for a number of cars, and am quite happy with it. The free version is fully operational and lets you have up to 3 cars in the database. I am sure you can find the program through Google or C-Net.
Only drawback is, that I do not believe it is still supported by the author. However, in all the years I have used it I have never had an occasion to require support.
Highly recommend it!

Is there not a Pontiac Historical Society? Would not it be able to provide an answer to this question?
In the Cadillac line, the Cad-LaSalle Club publishes authenticity manuals for various model years that address the matters. Perhaps PHS does the same?

In general, on 1950s GM cars undercoating was sometimes factory applied on underbody seams, rear inner wheel housings and in the transmission tunnel. On Pontiacs, except in rare instances on seams, it would not be found on any underhood panel or on the front inner fenders.
I am 110% certain that there was no undercoating on the hood of the '52 Olds my father owned back in the day.

i believe "drumming" would refer to a sheet of metal that will vibrate due to being close to a running machinery.
Got it, thanks! I would not think a '52 Pontiac engine would have enough power to cause drumming, given the weight of the hood?
-
Someone on another forum stated ... ''The hood should be undercoated with black undercoat. It keeps it from drumming.
Pray tell, educate me. What is "drumming?"

The number of car hunt/flip shows is getting out of hand. They have no semblance to reality whatsoever. Who buys/restores/sells a ride all in less than 7 days?
-
Since it cranks slowly when warm, then it appears the problem may well be with the connections to the starter, battery or grounds.

Koby,
I can not tell you how great it is to read your post! We welcome you into the ol' car craze with open arms.
As for advice on what to read, you should check out the Auto Restorer site and subscribe to the monthly mag. You will find it informative and entertaining. Here is the site - Auto Restorer Community

It would seem to me, if with the engine warmed the starter cranks normally, but the car will not start, it is NOT a starter problem. It could be either a fuel or ignition coil problem. Areas to consider?

Touch base with seller, but do not try him why you want to contact the buyer; at least do not state you want to give him the original/correct tranny!@helfen, You don't think the seller would hesitate to contact the current owner or put me in contact with the current owner? Like I said, I know he was selling it as a numbers matching car, and I don't know what kind of story he(she) potentially told the customer when they bought it. As a matter of fact, I still have the original title, since it was sold and I'm assuming re-titled under mechanics lean. -
I went to a Mecum auction because a '60 Olds conv I was interested in was being offered. It was decent looking, say a 10-20 footer. Magnets and a mirror should that each quarter panel had literally bondo in 5 lb. globs in the lower rear. Made the no brainer decision to pass.

We used to own a 1963 Monza conv.

Doubt that Ernest S. knows me from Adam, but thanks. Hope he can get you headed in the right direction on this!

I went back and checked, the admission is extra only at the Bloomington Gold and Back to the 50s auctions, admission is included for the rest.
Thanks for checking on this and reporting back. What you found conforms to my personal experience from a few years back.

I have clayed my 1962 Olds and was absolutely amazed at the result. It is not agressive at all. What it does is remove oxidants and contaminants that are on/in the paint surface. It sets up the paint for subsequent use of cleaner/polish/sealer. Believe me, it makes all the difference in the world!

Have you tried making contact with the model year advisors of the either the OCA or NAOC re: this? Suspect they may answer, or guide you the answer you seek.

#5 is an Oldsmobile badge. Hard for me to say the year, but I would guess probably post-1970.
