  1. I use to have a guy like Wilson that lived next door. Not a bad neighbor, though his carpentry skills were a bit questionable but the ingenuity was there. Never met a pallet he didn't like. I moved though. Now I can barely see my nearest neighbor through the woods. I like it better that way.
  2. Some progress shots of the project. Everything is sheathed and framing mostly complete. Looks like we will be setting trusses this week. I bought a lift to help ease that project. I also cut the 2 doorways on this end out to accept a 36 inch door as they were set for a 32 inch door. Why would you ever put a 32 inch door in a garage this size? The far doors were already set for 36 inch doors.
  3. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a syndrome not yet identified for those of us that like the right or even overkill tools. Here is my latest dabble into that field. I needed a lift for mounting projects on the property and the new garage being built. I stumbled across this big bruiser on Craigslist. Should get the job done. most without even extending the boom. It was a better buy than one half it's size. I don't usually name much but Big Bertha seems fitting.
  4. I've even seen some guys buying single axle trailers to haul their lighter early 30's late 20's cars. You wouldn't see me moving a car on a single axle trailer. one tire blows and it's all over, except the recovery.
  5. One of the nice bonuses of buying NOS parts lots is the piles of Bulbs of all sizes I now have. There aren't many sizes I can't find. I even got some nice Bulb displays full of bulbs. That's a great way to get a nice assortments as well, is to buy an older light bulb cabinet, like I see listed on ebay. You pay probably 10-20 cents a bulb or less and get the cabinet to keep them in for free. Most of mine have been Tungsol, Westinghouse, AC and GE.
  6. Lots of nice cars in the Northeast as well, but most were imported from the south and west, except the few summer estate cars. I've imported a few myself.
  7. 55-57 Birds seem to almost be undervalued nowadays . I've seen some pretty nice ones for the same 20's range they have been for the last 10 years. I've even seen some pretty decent drivers in the mid teens. A number you couldn't find one for 15 years ago. I drove my 57 Quite a bit when I had it. I think I had it 7 or 8 years. It was a pretty good road machine. I wouldn't mind getting a 55, one of these days in a stick. Black or that 50's seafoam type green would fit the bill nicely. Hopefully the next one will have a soft top and no hardtop. I redid the hardtop on mine and only put it on the car the day I sold it for the new owner to get it home.
  8. Mine is too new but sure is as pleasant as possible to plow snow. I put 60 hours on it the last 2 weeks moving dirt and stone for the new garage. It's a 2009 Kioti DK45S. The quick release plate is nice for changing between the forks, Bucket and plow.
  9. No truer words have ever been said "This is a project." Well atleast he decided to bail before he did any real damage to the Essex.
  10. Putting a junk yard engine in your car from a different type of vehicle may not be a wise choice. If going to all the trouble, why not use a crate engine "350". I believe the crate 350 is around $1500 with a warranty. I would prefer an original engine swap as it is a direct bolt in. But that's just my backwards way of thinking.
  11. If you look around as mentioned, an early 60's (not 59 or 60) Cadillac sedan that has been well kept is probably on par price wise or cheaper than a Powerglide Chevy 6. The Olds or better yet a Buick Electra 225 or like are also Cheaper than or on par with Chevies. Not all are loaded up with every gizmo of the era. Remember it was the era when you could buy a car the way you wanted. Power 6 way seat with manual steering and brakes with a bronze interior in a green car. They gave you what you wanted. Not one of 4 packages available that forced you to buy the extra crap you didn't want. I would go for the one you like best. Nothing better than walking out to the parking lot and admiring your ride every time you walk up to it. That's the way I want my cars to be. If they don't excite you, you will be bored of them quickly. Chances are if they don't excite you as well, they probably won't excite a buyer much when you have decided to buy something that does.
  12. That's an idea. I was thinking of having the doors on the inside of the wall. There is a guy probably less than 5 miles from here with something similar on a very nice looking barn/ garage. I need to stop in and see what he did. I was hoping to find someone who knew him so I could be introduced. I'm not one for just nosing around someone else's place if possible.
  13. Unfortunately on my budget stone or brick weren't an option. We've exhausted the pros and cons of steel roofs. I have to worry about sliding snow and eminent death to me or the kids with one as well as water damming problems. It's going to be wood sided as well so if catastrophe strikes I will be SOL. That said, almost all the buildings in this area are wood including my other garage. I was hoping to add a fire suppression pond to the property but i have to purchase a couple more acres to do so. In the event of a forest fire I'm not sure what I will do. I do plan on keeping all the brush cut back and have continued to clear more underbrush on the property since we bought it. It's good to have all angles covered but not always possible. I aimed for the most likely as well as the ability to make it very energy efficient. Something that will hopefully be more of a problem than a forest fire. If the greenies would let up a bit and let the forests be managed not just proclaimed forever wild with no access or maintenance, there would be alot less risk of fire. I'm baffled that "the damage" they claim logging does to the environment or the Carbon footprint of such causes is never compared to or weighed in on the fact , when you look at the carbon footprint a forest fire (which damage from could have been greatly reduced through proper forest management) causes. Hopefully some day they figure it out. The Indian I would throw on ebay. You might be surprised what you get for it.
  14. We have walls!!! Well most of them. Though they aren't done, it really lets you put the size into perspective . That excavator in the Building is my friends it's bigger than mine.
  15. Bi Folds might be an option. Probably easier to seal. That would make them 4 foot wide each, which seems manageable. The height would be the bigger problem. Too bad I couldn't do Dutch Bifold doors. THat would be cool and easier to handle each part. I know the 4 foot by 8 foot doors I built for my shed seem to work very well even after a year of settling shrinking and swelling. Of course alot of it is in the hinges.
  16. The internet has been around that long? Man now I feel like an antique.
  17. We got one wall stood today. 2x8 14 foot walls are a handful when standing them on top of a 2 foot knee wall. Unfortunately my Excavator's reach is about 8 inches to short to use it. We set it with my tractor and forks using some lower bracing to lift on. The guy I actually bought my excavator from is using his crew to build it, so he decided to bring his bigger excavator over so we can set them easier. I'll try to post some photos tomorrow when we have a few of them standing.
  18. I've got lots of ideas on how to take it from a plain garage into something a bit jazzier. The only thing holding me back is time and Money. Once the shell is all up though, I can peck away on it by myself as the funds become available. It's kind of hard having the guys do all the work. I'm playing GC running for errands and trying to keep ahead of them on critical decisions so I have the answer, when we reach those thresholds. Having once had my own contracting business and doing all the work myself, I feel kind of lost standing back and just letting them work. They seem pretty efficient though, so that's probably best.
  19. I 'm also looking into building custom sliding doors at some point. Has anyone built any really good ones? Any recommendations for hardware for such? My opening is going to be 16 by 14 foot, so 2- 8 by 14 foot doors will be necessary.
  20. We finally started putting wood together today. Should have a wall or 2 standing by tomorrow Eve. I've been looking into renting a telehandler but the price and extra insurance may require a rethink. I actually have an indoor scissor lift with a 20 foot reach I can run outside on Plywood which I might do to get material on the roof. The cost of the telehandler rental would pay for all the windows. The lumber yard also lost my custom header. Fortunately they located it at another warehouse. The lumber yard is also only about 1 and 1/2 miles from the house, makes it handy as I was there a few times to day. I can't wait to see some walls in the vertical position.
  21. That one looks pretty good from what I can see and CA lineage is usually a plus as it means it was usually in a good climate to survive. Looks extremely clean under the hood so it has been "detailed" It appears to be top dollar but then again if you bought the same car in CA and had it shipped you would spend quite a bit on that. I would still like to see photos underneath. Though an all original car that has been well kept is always a good bet. Problem is, it would be a shame to put this into regular service , especially during the winter months.
  22. Only problem with 67-72 style versus 60-64 style say is , well the style. Alot less chrome, alot more plastic. I too prefer the early 60's over the late. Driving a 60's car year round in OH will probably not be an easy task as the winters are very salty and will consume one fairly quick. Lots of extra nooks and crannies for the salt to collect in. Even with a modern vehicle it's a battle and that's with fluid film, grease, You name it.
  23. Here is a 63 Caddy right near Boston for 4500. Seems too cheap. https://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/cto/d/1963-caddy/6349217941.html
  24. Here is a 62 Impala in my neck of the woods (probably 15 -20 minutes away) for 7,000. https://glensfalls.craigslist.org/cto/d/62-impala/6365113038.html
