  1. I also really like seeing a Cordovan '61...it looks better in the light than a dingy old shop covered in dust...gotta get the '29 done to work on the convertible....
  2. Drool. I love the colour of that green GS. Was that a '66 Wildcat GS convertible with Super Wildcat? Drool slobber drool. Bit of a run for a show and shine, but it looks like it was a grand day. I'm jealous.

  4. Cool. There is appreciation among most car folk for the diamonds in the rough and for people who make the effort to attend shows with a car some would consider "less than pristine".
  5. To quote someone wise, "Change is good Donkey". This sounds like a great opportunity and a great job (at least the work should be cool, regardless of any politics and such). I don't know why everyone is all uppity about winter...that's down south where it doesn't get cold. Yes, I believe there is more snow in that part of the world than we get, but it generally isn't that cold (I spent a winter in Toronto and never wore what I considered to be a winter jacket). If you do get to a point of crossing the border regularly, I'm sure there is something like a Nexus card (at least that's what it is called for Canadians) that has special, quicker lines. Good luck.

  7. For what it is worth, the front bumper of that '56 is a heck of a lot straighter than what is on my car. Granted, mine is solid, just all dinged up and pulled on and such. These trips you've been making on nice late summer / early fall days must give new meaning to the "old car smell". It would have been fun to stroll the yard with you my friend.

  9. Mine arrived in the mail today. It's been read cover to cover (OK, I skim the classifieds looking for stuff that pertains to me). There's plenty of stuff in there to drool over, as usual. I was pleased to see the 1923 advertising as it confirms that the conversion I purchased is a fairly reasonable facsimile of what Buick produced. Now I just need to get it up to snuff.

  11. The bride sent me the photos.... They had a photographer dealing with all that, so the only photos I'd taken were of the car in front of the church.

  13. For insurance purposes, you are probably best off to get an appraiser to look at it. They may discuss with you how much you think it is worth, but having that independent assessment is going to give the insurance company something to go on. Compared to the cost of restoration (or a tank or two of fuel for that matter), I think an appraisal can be money well spent. In reality, the insurance company doesn't care much about its value - they will charge premiums based upon the agreed value for insurance purposes. That is then the maximum they will pay out for a total loss. In the event of a loss, the onus will still be on you to prove its value, which again makes an appraisal a good idea. There are price guides out there (such as NADA) that can help you determine its value, but they are guides and may not properly account for certain options. They are generally based upon known sales, so cars of a particular model that don't change hands often make the guides less reliable for that model. I hope this helps out a bit.
  14. Drool. I'd love to have it, but short of a bucket of money falling in my lap, it is not to be. It certainly appears to be a great car...first year for the V8. I can't say I recall seeing a battery cover like that car has before...neat.

  19. What a mixture of emotions that brings.... It is sad to see what has been allowed to happen to these cars (sinking to the point of no return) mixed with excitement for what is in there, especially considering how much of it you haven't gotten through. It is a shame that there likely isn't time to pull all the good pieces and catalog them and make them available to hobbyists. Oh well, it is what it is. JD, at least you got to work in the shade :cool:
  20. Well, that explains the sweat stains on the leather seat... The vehicle has made quite the trip and I intend to write something up at least for the Gopher State Chapter newsletter. The reality is that the vehicle has spent many miles on a trailer and with some of the bounce that occurs, it is always possible crud has found its way into places it shouldn't. Dave also has the advantage of understanding these older vehicles better than Paul and I do. That's not an excuse, but my next oldest that I've driven is the '41 and it is quite modern by comparison in terms of starting and running. That said, if you want to make your way up here, you are more than welcome. I can make a bed available and stock up on some Captain Morgan.
  21. Interesting perspective. My father was a farmer, so drove a manual transmission in his big trucks until he got out of farming. From the '69 Meteor (first car I remember), they were all automatic. All his pickups were automatic (starting with '74 or '76 Ford) except for a 5 speed in a Ranger he had for a few years. I think if one drove the big, cumbersome vehicles with manual transmissions, perhaps an automatic was desired. When my parents got married, Dad had a '57 Chevrolet...I don't recall if he ever noted if it was an automatic or not.
