1. Four bolts will disconnect the torque tube from the tranny, but then you should pull the rear end back to disconnect the drive shaft from the U-joint. If you are removing the engine and trans as a unit, you will have to drop the trans cross member to allow room to tilt the engine to clear the radiator cross member. When pulling the rear end back, do not forget to unhook the brake line, the sway bar and the shock links.
2. Thank you for the prompt reply. After reading this post, I will go to 10-30 regular Valvoline and try to stop believing all the propagnda put out by the oil companies. I have run valvoline for years ,but I got snookered by the Max-Life BS
3. The new Valvoline is called Max-Life and it supposedly has additives that will help higher mileage engines. They say it will help older seals and I just wondered if this was all hype or if it had some basis in fact.
4. 68 Corvair 500 coupe,56,860 mile car. 3 speed manual trans, rubber floor mats, heater. This car was repainted 15 years ago and put in a barn. The car appears to be very solidwith no rust in the floor or trunk. It runs and drives GREAT.$2500 OBO
I live close to Flint Mich and the car can be seen anytime.
buickjoet@aol.com
5. I have not seen any Dexron 2 with a suffix letter. I use the red Dexron 2 in my Dynaflows and have not had any problems with them.
6. Valvoline just came out with a new oil for higher mileage engines.Any comment on this product??
7. As a rule, advancing the timing will give you a little low speed acceleration and lose some top end. The best thing to do is recurve the advance .The removal of the catalytic convertor helped the engine breathe, but it is now illegal
8. Greg, thank you for the very comprehensive report. You suggest that 10-40 is not as good as 10-30 or 20-50 and I would like to know why? I use 10-40 and it seems to work fine ,but if it is not good for my engines ,I can change easily.I could just as easily switch to 20-50 as the cars are notused in the winter
9. The straight 8 Buicks had a filter that only filtered oil to the overhead, and the best thing to do with them is chang oil often and filters seldom. I know many will say they don't want new oil going through an old filter ,but you can take the filter out and see that it isn't that dirty. I change oil depending on the usage of the vehicle. If it is run mostly on the highway ,I go as much as 7000. If it is short trips ,I will
change at 3000. One thing I think is
important is that when you put your car up
for the winter ,it should have fresh oil so the bearings do not have any contaminants working on them over the winter
10. The ROA magazine had an article on repairing them a few years ago. You might contact someone in the Riv club .
11. There is an old axiom that says" if something looks too good to be true,it usually is"
12. The HEI unit from the 455 is a bolt in for your 430 .The 350 HEI willalso fit ,but you will have to change the distributor gear. You can use the one from your old unit ,by drilling the pin hole for the larger pin in the HEI
13. I believe both the Cutlass and the A body Buicks that were rear drive had coil spring suspension.
14. I just got a 2BBL intake for a 401 ,and at the local oval track they have a 2BBL class, which will make my buddies 67 with a 455 really be competitive. i can't wait to see what the other drivers have to say.
15. If you have replaced the battery cables , that could also be a problem,as most replacement cables are too small. If you need cables ,go to a tractor supply as they have number 1 cables. Most of the new ones are number 4
16. You may be looking in the wrong place. If the timing is OK, you might want to check the starter. The straight eight starter was borderline when they were new. I have had mine rewound with extra coils on the armature and they work MUCH better . Check with a reputable starter rebuilder ,and see if they can't help you.
17. 401s have a split rear seal,so all they have to do is remove the pan.
18. I have owned my 40 Buick for 30 years and have never had a reason to convert it . I do have some modified buicks ,but the 40 works just fine on 6 volts. There is an old adage"If it aint broke ,don't fix it " and I think that applies in this case.
19. In any organization of the size of the BCA, you will have people who are not happy unless they are antagonizing someone!if you cannot ignore them you will end up with ulcers and I have made it a point to give ulcers not get them ,so the best thing to do ,is consider the source and ignore it!
20. I wish I could have given you something concrete, but the is how things stand at the present time. We will keep you up on what is happening ,and let you know when we can get reservations.
21. The hotels in Flint will not accept reservations this far in advance. We have a committee working to see if they will break their rule ,which is not accepting anything more than one year in advance. So far ,they have not had any luck, but the Flint Tourist and convention Bureau is working with them now . Hopefully this will get us on track
22. A bearing that is too tight will fail almost immediately ,and a loose beaing will fail over a period of time, so you are better off to have them a little loose than a little tight.
23. I live just west of Flint ,and I got mine Saturday the 13th
Joe Taubitz
24. After market skirte were popular from the mid 30s until some of the manufacturers started installing them in the 60s. Most of the skirts available had a hook that clamped on the front ,a clamp and wing nut affair that locked the back ,and a movable arm that would hold the top of the skirt in place. This arm looked almost like a boomarang that had a pivot in the middle and when you moved the bottom ,it would rotate up and clamp on the top of the fender
