  1. When the nail head first cam out, buick made some high performance parts, and called them "export ". They were used in the Buicks that ran the Pan -American road race and for experimentation. They had solid lifter cams, and different pistons also
  2. The 430 is a very good engine! The only down side is that it is a high compression engine, and requires premium fuel. They make good power, and gobs of torque. You will be able to melt the rear tires if you want to.
  3. The dual four barrel intake is used primarily for the looks. I had a friend that tried to make HP with one for two years,and when he switched to a TA performanc intake , the car was faster by .3 which is interesting to me. There is such a thing as too much.
  4. There were three manifolds for the 32. The 50 seris,the 60 series and the 80-90 that used the same one.
  5. This info is from: Buick Service Signals, October 1967 When Buick was in it's infancy.it was decided to develop a familiar insignia and the Buick script came into being. An oblong background was added in 1913 In 1937 a new Buick trademark appeared.It was the ancestral coat of arms of the David Buick family.Like all coats of arms, the basic part is the shield, the first defensive armor used. Shields were decorated to distinguish one scotsh clan from another.The Buick shield used a checkered diagonal ( or"bend" as it is called in helaldry)as one decorative mark.Another was the buck's head.Animals were often used on shields, and the buck was a natural for the BUIK family, as the name was then spelled. Crosses were added to the shields during the crusades and different clans designed their own crosses to distinguish them from the crosses on other shields.The distinctiveness on the crosswas a hole or circle in the center. The helmet and the mantle simulate the helmets and mantles worn by Buik soldiers. The three prongs and feathers at the top,resembling a crown and plume resemble the crests worn on the Buik clan's helmets.The prongs indicate that the BUIKs were barons in Scotland. The Buick coat of arms remained as the Buick emblem until 1959 when the tri-shield came into being. The three shields include the distinguishing marks of the original BUIK shield, and are each in one of Buick;s colors-red, white and blue.The shields also represents the three lines of cars offered by Buick in 1959--The Electra, the Invicta, and the LeSabre
  6. It will be extremely difficult for the Buicktown Chapter to arrange something like this, as we have seminars ,tours, parking , registration,and the hospitality room to manage. There are many activities that will have to be arranged by the people that are involved in the activity. We will have a bulletin board available in the registration area that can be used for this type of information.
  7. Congratulations!!! I am jealous of the HAIR. He looks like he is already looking for a drivers license. Your plan for getting him into old cars is wonderful.
  8. If you have the stock cam and exhaust manifolds, I believe the 5/16 line will be good enough for everything but a long (think Bonneville)top speed run. Dual carbs have the advantage of having two float bowls for storage, which helps. I used to run a Caddy engine with 4 carbs and a 5/16 line and it didn't run out of fuel until it got over 5,800 RPM
  9. There is a very good possibility that when you go to wide open throttle the velocity of air going by the jets is not enough to pull fuel. If you can leave the line at partial throttle and then floor it , you may need more fuel delivery by the accelerator pumps. If the fuel line is too small ,or the fuel pump is not up to the task of delivery, you will feel the engine quit as ithe RPM reaches the critical point. It will feel like you turned off the key. Then if you let it recover a bit,the power should come back
  10. The nailhead that accepted the ST-400 also had a change in the back of the crankshaft. I believe you would also need this done to put the later TH-400 on the 425. You may find it easier to find a 64-66 nailhead and tranny than the work involved in installing a late trans PS The Dynaflow by 63 was almost bullet proof,and with the VP converter, would smoke the tires if you wanted to. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
  11. If you will go to :www.classiccarclub.org/carlist.htm , you will see what is acceptable to the CCCA. They accept NO vehicle newer that 1948 and are VERY FUSSY even then. The word Classic is one of the most missused words in the old car dictionary. You always hear about the "classic" 57 Chevs and the like. This is all wishful thinking. The only Buicks recognized by the CCCA are the 90 series from 1931 to 1942
  12. I forgot to mention that. Thank you. Ported spark is the choice most make. If you use manifold vacuum, the idle tends to be erratic.
  13. The 76 HEI should be close enough that the engine should not overheat. The optimum timing for the 430 is 34-36 degrees at 2500 RPM . Make sure the vacuum advance is functioning also, as that can make the engine run retarded on the road.
  14. With 2.93 gears,you are not runnung 1800-2200 RPM until at least 60MPH. The drone comes from the 1300- 1500 range. I run my 37 in second gear in town and it has fairly well done away with the resonance.
  15. If the office does not have the info, you might try Bruce Kile. He was in charge of that meet, and also had his 36 Special sedan at the meet.
  16. What year is your Buick? I have never seen a drive shaft that was not pinned to the pinion shaft on a Buick with the torque tube. You can remove the torque tube by removing the bolts that hold it to the axle housing. You should then be able to see the coupler that connects the drive shaft to the pinion shaft. I usually have a hard time getting them separated even with the pin out.

  18. I am also pleased that users will have to be named. It will hopefully stop some of the nonsense that we have had in the past.
  19. If you have a 2.73 axle in your car , an overdrive would be of questionable value to you. I have a 3.31 in my GS,and i leave the convertor unlocked until I have room to run a little. If I lock it up the engine is lugging ,as I have a mild cam and it needs 2,000 RPM to stay clean. I have a 2.56 axle in my 37 Buick street rod, and a TH-400 trans. If I were doing the 37 now, I would have put in a 3.2-3.6 axle, but unless I change rear axle ratios, the TH-400 will stay in place. The 37 does not have the acceleration of the GS but it is fun to downshift to passing gear at 80 MPH and watch people's faces
  20. Installing the 200-4R in my GS was mainly done because my wife did not like the noise. I have headers, a mandrel bent exhaust system with a crossover pipe and Flowmaster mufflers. The RPM at 70 was 3300, and with the overdrive, it is 2200 and the decibel level has dropped dramatically.That coupled to a 3-4 MPG increase made it worthwhile to me.
  21. Bill, I have used the interstate mile markers for years, and they are usually very close. I usually try to figure out what MPH on the speedo will take me a mile a minute, and that gives me the amount I am off. If you find it quite a bit, go to a truck shop and get a ratio adapter. they have them for almost every ratio.When I changed rear axle ratios in my 40 ,I had to use a ,72 to 1
  22. My question to you is: why do you think it is necessary?? The engines of today will run 200,000 miles with proper maintenance, and the lubrication systems are so far superior to the old engines, that My personal opinion is that you would be wasting your money, and possibly fouling up a sensor or two.The older engines with open breathers and oil filters that did not filter all the oil left much to be desired, but the engineers have really done their homework.
  23. The 401 intake is too wide for the 364. It will fit with some port work, but you would be better off finding a 364 intake
  24. The 58 was a 364, so unless he change engines, he needs a 364 manifold
