    Thanks for the replies! I used your advice and got them opened up. One looked reasonably clean while the other was completely rusted over. I soaked that one in rust killer as I can’t really damage it much more than what’s been done. I’ve got them both clean, and now I’m down to testing them. I’m testing directly off of a 6v battery and cables, and upon grounding on the horn’s casing and positive to the wire, I can hear a tiny clicking or rattling inside the horn but not much more. Gonna try cleaning the points a bit better as I haven’t done that yet, at least not much more than a slight scraping. How do I know when it’s properly adjusted? I see there is an adjustment nut.

  2. @Rusty_OToole Thanks for the reply! I thought so too, looks like a crack, definitely not something that started yesterday. Glad it happened when it did. That’s a good idea, I never thought to call some local auto electric workers, I’ll call around and see if anybody has some pulley fans. How extensive is the work to rebuild a generator? Haven’t done one yet, doesn’t seem to be much to it but I plan on doing a 12v conversion soon only because this car will be my daily. I love originality but not for things like this.

Hi there, I finally got my 52 Chieftain running, and I took it for a short cruise and after letting it idle for a bit in the driveway I heard an awful grinding noise along with shavings flinging up with the radiator fan. I shut the car off and checked everything, noticing that the generator fan pulley had split in two. I have since removed it and am searching for a new pulley or something sufficient just for now as I do not want to buy a whole new unit yet. What might have caused this? I’m not sure if it was the belt being too tight or if it was just old and ready to go. I don’t want it to happen again so I’m asking here to see if it’s happened to anyone else before.

  4. Hi there, I have a set of Delco Remy 6v electrical horns and I’m trying to get them working. Upon general inspection I can see that the wiring is pretty shot, copper completely exposed and corroded. I can see old wasp nesting inside of the horn. What is the trick to getting these opened up? I can’t see any kind of nut or bolt that’d come off with a regular socket, they all seem to be round besides the hex nut that holds the mounting bracket. Once I do have them opened, what should I do? Not sure what to expect inside of it as I’ve never opened one. Thank you for any help, I’d love to hear these old things go again!

  5. How is it mechanically? If she’s a good runner, just make sure your brakes are good, cooling system is working as it should, and take her for a ride! As for restoration, it doesn’t seem to need much. Don’t worry about cosmetics, because it looks very good for its age and in my opinion adds character. Every ding and scratch tells a story..

     

    I love that this car has family history and is still with the family, keep er’ goin!

  6. Hi there, I’m in the process of rebuilding my 52’ Pontiac’s double action fuel pump but am struggling to find parts for it. I found a guy on eBay who has a kit, but just my luck he’s refused to ship it or respond to my messages. Does anyone out there sell these diaphragms or know where I can get some from a reliable source? I’d also love to know a more specific model or part number on this pump, that will help me narrow down my search if anyone knows.

  7. Like zdillinger said, make sure you have thick welder cables. Sometimes people make the mistake of putting thinner 12v cables on a 6v and this results in cooked or inefficient cables. If the car was running and driving beforehand it’s odd that it is now having issues. Was it stored with the battery in it? There may be corrosion in not so obvious places. Check all your connections and give them a good scrubbing, and for extra measure use some dielectric grease on each contact point. Helped me fix my 52’ Pontiac’s starter issues. Starter is getting power and starter motors are VERY hardy so it should be good, just not getting what it needs. Let me know if you get it going! :)

  8. Hi there, I’m in the process of replacing my 1952 Pontiac Chieftain’s sun visor and assembly as it was stolen off the car before I purchased it. I’ve found a sun visor, now the part that has me stumped is what I need to buy for the center windshield molding, I know a chrome strip goes here but judging by the bracket on the visor it needs a special piece.(?) If anyone has information on how this goes together or has an early 50s GM car of this style I’d love some closeup photos so I can get everything back together right. Information on what kind of screws I need would be great as well.

  9. Hi there, I’m looking for parts for a 1968 Mercury Montego MX Convertible. I’m looking for new taillights in good condition or a place to find reproductions, a dashboard clock, center console lamp cover and any other random parts someone might have like accessories. I am also missing a trim piece off the top of the windshield if anyone has that.

  10. Never trust your parts, especially distributors. If you know that everything is set right and yet it still won't work, verify the integrity of your parts. I've had it happen to me multiple times where I just couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work when I KNEW everything was correct and it turned out to be faulty parts right out of the box. Sounds like you might've tried that already though.

     

    How do you know for sure it is cylinder 5 & 7? Have you verified your firing order and adjusted your timing? How are your spark plugs? Even in the worst scenarios a cylinder should still fire unless it has no connection to the distributor at all or isn't getting fuel.

     

    This is more of a last ditch test, but try putting a little marvel mystery oil down these two cylinders, run the motor for a bit then shut it down and see if it was burned or not. 

     

    Check your:

     

    Firing order

    Timing
    Spark Plugs

    Distributor

    Fuel-Air Mixture

    Swap your 5&7 wires on the distributor like others have suggested

     

    I'm no professional, but I'm just offering advice collected from hours of cursing simple problems then feeling like a fool afterwards. Good luck!

  11. Hi there, I was recently tinkering with my 52' Pontiac's carburetor, and pulled off this ancient gasket that looks like four 2-barrel carburetor gaskets stapled together. I hadn't even noticed it because it was painted over by the previous owner and looked like a part of the intake. I have no idea if this is factory or not, but it's completely rotten and clearly not sealing much anymore. I can't properly mount the carburetor without it as it was keeping the carburetor at the correct height. Is there a specific part out there I can buy for this or can I just make this by layering a few 2-barrel gaskets? Never seen this before.
