  3. Our summer driver is a six cylinder 1969 Mustang convertible base model, no power options. It's due for brake job soon and we're wondering if it would be practical (not too expensive and not too difficult) to add a vacuum booster to make braking easier and more effective. We don't want to get into a disk brake swap or anything complicated. We are hoping that sourcing the correct booster and maybe a new or different master cylinder, possible linkage changes, and making the proper vacuum connection will enable us to complete the installation relatively quickly and without a lot of difficulty. Is this a reasonable upgrade? Are there hidden problems here we don't see? Please comment if you have any information or hints. Thanks.

  5. Thank you for the password security suggestions and information. As a computer idiot, I was unaware of password managers and have been juggling too many for too long. I can't think of anything in my computer that would be useful to anyone else, but I certainly will look into the system you suggested, provided I can understand what they are trying to tell (or sell) me. I can get into the forums with my account and password which is "saved" in my computer, but I have been unable to unearth the password which the new device is requiring before it will let me comment. '55 and '56 Mainline series business coupes, sedans and 2-door wagons were purchased by Ma Bell and sold by auction in the '60's, usually with rather low mileage because of their limited local use and the fact that they were speed governed by a device between the carburetor and the intake manifold. We were able to purchase them in the $200 - $300 range, disable the governor, wet sand, and repaint the olive drab fleet paint and re-sell them for $600 - $700, sometimes having added a radio or backseat procured from a wrecking yard. They were quite reliable as college or commute cars and reasonably peppy due to their relatively light weight and 202 ft-#'s of torque. Some of the purchasers would bolt in 312 cu.in. "Y-blocks" and create real "sleepers". With an engine compartment cleanup, this '56 would be a great driver, but the asking price may seem somewhat optimistic.

  9. I've always liked the '36 Fords. My father bought a brand new sedan like the one above as a "left-over" in 1937. Later in the year, do to the lingering Depression, he lost his job and hid the car in a friend's barn to thwart the repossessor while using his meager savings to support his mother and pay rent. An avid pipe smoker, he chewed on his empty pipe until he found employment late in the year, made up the back car payments and had a long satisfying smoke. As a kid in the '40's, I recall being fascinated by the small clock that was part of the accessory interior rear view mirror. It was wound by pulling a short string that hung down below it. As a kid would do, I over-wound it one day while playing in the car and it never worked again. I'm sure he knew what had happened, but there was no proof, or consequences (nor a self-incriminating kid.) That old sedan survived the second world war, gas and tire rationing, a brush applied paint job about 1945, a broken spring that caused it to list to starboard, two rambunctious kids and a wife until it was traded in on a 1941 Cadillac. (But that's another story.) Much later, in college, I became the owner of a '36 flat-back 2-door sedan, pretty much in stock condition, but rumored to be an ex-police car, due to the repaired bullet holes that were found in a fender and the deck. A buddy of mine had collected finned aluminum heads and a 2 x 2 intake manifold and offered me a deal on them. Once installed on the '36, and having done a passable tune-up, we backed it down the driveway and slowly onto the street. Blast-off! It moved like a scalded dog - until the end of the street came into view sooner than anticipated. Slamming on the brakes resulted in the locking of one rear (mechanical) brake and no brakes on the other three corners. We slid who knows how far in a 90 degree drift before stomping the clutch to the floor and coming to a stop against a curb. Limping home, we realized we probably could use a change of underwear. The next time the car left the property it was under new ownership. I still have a hankerin' for '36 Fords, but I'll appreciate them from afar.

  15. I bought one brand new in April of '68. The best thing I ever did with it was SELL it (when it was just a year old). Real POS mechanically and cosmetically. Maybe if you dump $100k into this one, you'd have a dependable car, maybe not.
