  1. OK. After putting on around 100 miles in the day and half I have had the Chrysler I can give a little run down on the car. First. No regrets. It runs and drives and operates like a car did in 1950 and that includes the fluid drive operated transmission. Low range acts as low should and high range will shift at the right speed even though I think 2nd to 3rd is a little high at just under 40 mph. It has a narrow band of rpm and speed to match up on the flat but going down hill you never even notice the shift point. At a stop light it will idle correctly but a little noticeable vibration. Fluid drive is a wonderful thing. Give the car a little gas and it pulls very nicely from a dead stop while sitting in high range for the 2 minute light change. Just a lift of the gas pedal for a couple seconds and gears shift nicely. The paint is what it is for an original paint job and a car with no body working. It is cracked, has some stone bruises. A couple pings from the inside out in the back wheel wells. Does have some flaking under one headlight. Some old touch up. But boy does it shine ! Much better then I thought it should. The engine compartment and trunk show the aging of a well cared for old girl. Clean but driven. Interior is just great for original. More then it's fair share of moth bites in the wool but the leather is soft and pliable. No sag in the springs and the seat is very stiff. Everything from the gauges to the lights to the switches all work as should and are bright and clean. Even the clock works but loses 5 mins a day. Heater blower won't come on so will dig into that. Defroster blower works fine. The E brake warning light likes to come on for no reason and flashes. At night it sucks. This green flash nailing your left eye. There is no pitting or any damage at all on the bright work both inside and out. One front turn signal is out so will see about the bulb. No drips yet. Has a wee pull to the right and will rotate the front tires and check that out. No squeaks, no rattles. Steering and suspension is as tight as new. Turning radius is that of an aircraft carrier. At 55-60 it just wants to level out and float over the bumps. No big bouncing. I really think taking the chance like I did has given me a very special car. Am sure some other things will crop up the future but good feelings in every regard about it.
  2. My father who was a big time collector of rare pre-prohibition brewery advertising always said "The regret of buying something good for a little extra will soon pass once it is in your hands but the regret of passing on it and then never seeing something so good again will always stay with you." Yeah now I have to sell the Z28 but now that I look at it I was just looking for a good enough reason to sell it anyway. There are two more cars on the list I would like to get. A 47 Plymouth and a 39-40 Dodge. Sedan or coupe.
  3. Delivery Delay ! Blown hose on his semi outside Dallas so looking like sometime this afternoon. I needed an early day off on a friday anyway.
  4. The 1950 Chrysler Windsor Newport that had so many of us tied up in knots trying to figure out if selling a kidney would be enough, is due for delivery tonight. Spent much time on the phone with the owner who had inherited his grandfathers collection. Really looking forward to seeing this car for sure.
  5. Trust me, we know how you feel about the pipelines. I think I just some Alberta crude just went past house as the keystone pipeline is about 150 yards across the street. What we had before this about killed the economy and had the GDP just above negative for 8 years.
  6. Oh I am sure I could if I could get something near the correct length. Evapo-Rust is great on everything rusty. It only dissolves rust and is not an acid. Won't affect anything else. This cranbrook had sat for 10 years and is scaled up with rust inside the jackets. Water pump was froze with scale as was thermostat and radiator. Right now and for the next 4-5 weeks it is running almost straight evapo-rust as coolant. Have to watch the weather late in the year as it has a freeze point close to water. When it is done I am pretty sure the overheating issue will be gone along with the scale. You can run this straight all summer and have an engine so clean inside it will look new. It works even better when at 180 degree's. BUT remember that if you have any rust that is stopping a leak you will get a leak after evapo has done it's job. It will not cause one only expose one
  7. Looking for a repop really. These cables all seem to rust inside. Might remove it and toss in a bucket of evapo-rust and see what happens.
  8. The longer control cable from the "summer winter" control that goes through the firewall to the front damper door. Mine is rusted solid inside and won't move.
  9. Found this thread and plan on using evapo-rust in the hopes of getting a 1953 Cranbrook to stop running hot from scale. Got the car for a song because previous owner could not. He put in a new radiator, water pump and thermostat and looking at these parts I can only imagine the scale in the motor. One question. The 53 has a couple coils for heat and defrost. Going to be hard to get all the anti-freeze 100% out. Won't affect the evapo-rust too much will it? Figure I have 6-8 weeks of not worrying about any possibility of a freeze so will drive it every day keeping an eye on the weather. And panty hose as a filter? This old survivor needs saved. Runs, drives and stops great but lived a long life on a county gravel road.
  10. The spacing is off by the drawing it looks to me and placement. But I could be wrong. Never seen it in person. I have heard good things of the reverse spring method over high tension cable.
  11. Got my survivor Cranbrook home yesterday and before she goes on the road need to address a couple things like tires, suspensions, etc. First I need a source for not "over the top in price" front shocks. 150 for a pair seems steep. Second is a clutch question. It engages REALLY high up on the pedal. Shifts fine though. Am I looking at needing to do a clutch soon or is this a rod adjustment? Two owner car and not driven much in the past 8 years.
  12. Seems like his must go to show for what he collects.
  13. I would like some old money. Not to remake the world in my own personal image like Bill Gates but so I could be a regular guy like Jay Leno and makes folks happy.
  14. seeing something rusty going on in the rear quarters ? What is the condition of the trunk pan ?
  15. Looking where this last year 350- 4 speed (US) seems headed in demand I might be able to make it a 2 fer trade ! I would love a 1960 Phoenix or 60-62 big block Imperial. Guess I am getting old. Looking at what I had in 1983 pictures I at first missed having a 12 second street car but then I remembered I don't miss breaking crap all the time and doing repairs all week just to drive it 4 hours on a saturday night.
  16. I am the third owner of the car and outside no cats on it anymore, everything else on it is as it left the factory. I was shocked when I opened the hood and saw a 1980 time capsule down to carb and smog pump. I have a box of tune up parts and maintenance things to throw in as well like filters, etc. When the car was repainted in 1983 they removed the torsion bar springs (cut off) for the trunk to get a proper paint job and never reinstalled them because they were worried of screwing up the paint. I said the same thing so they are included. NOS in the bag. Next guy can install if he wished. I use the 30 year old wood pole as they did. The trunk paint is as good as the rest of the car. Car was never undercoated so normal surface rust there. Never anywhere else. Has the original T-Top padded storage bags in excellent shape included. Some wear / stain on the drivers seat, original interior. Back side panels could use a touch up. I have the correct paint but decided against doing it myself. Only original once. AC was converted. Only the clock doesn't work but they never did anyway. Was going to remove and install a repo factory look oil pressure gauge in it's place but again decided against it. 1980's cassette stereo in place of the original but nothing chopped up.
  17. I gave myself a loan this time around until I can sell the Z28. It just doesn't give me the warm fuzzy feeling anymore driving it like the 40's and early 50's cars do. I stood back when it was 10600 and just said "darn it". When it dropped to 9600 I leaned in a little closer and took a deeper gander at the pictures and said "hmmmmm". When it went to 8600 I broke out the calculator and figured out how many cans of beenie weenies for lunch divided by tins of vienna sausages and cheap swill beer instead of steak and Hof Brau it would take to make it work. Then I looked at the Camaro and the math became easy. I just don't think another Chrysler looking like this would become available at this price if I ever searched for one . I talked with the seller today and he is liquidating his Grandfathers cars he inherited. And the more I stare at the black walls they just seem to be what is really meant for this cars color. The hubcaps only showcase the contrast of the black with the two tone green. Someone really cared a lot for this car. Look forward to being it's next caretaker
  18. Oh I am fine on the whole fluid drive thing, just having finished a clutch job on the old 46 pictured in my avatar. Just did not understand how Chrysler did their trim levels as I have never owned one before. Didn't know they had different designations based on 8 or 6 cylinder cars. Never researched it as I had really no plans to buy a Chrysler at this time. But this car seemed to get big thumbs up from everyone who saw it so I said what the heck and bought it. Have regretted in the past not making a great deal happen ! I just need to learn it. Everything really the same as my other 2 flat sixes from this era. The 46 Dodge and 53 Plymouth.
  19. I am not up to speed on Chrysler trim levels yet Neil. Just what did you get stepping up to Windsor Newport from Windsor but not going up to Windsor New Yorker? And of course these were all below the Royal which I guess was loaded. Find it odd as well that it is a 3 speed and not a fluid drive car. I figured that was a gimmie on a Chrysler.
  20. On the front fender included in the windsor trim, what is the wording under it ? I cannot see for the life of me what it says. Newport ?
  21. Here is the limited vid. Suspension looks to be ok ! Might need shocks
  22. I really am having a hard time going over the pictures to see anything I don't like here. WW tires maybe? I know green is not a big draw these days but I like different. I know pictures don't tell us everything especially when you can use select angles. But I looked and looked and looked in detail blowing up shots and I don't see anything that would me doubt buying this car. Not a great vid of it driving but I don't hear a sewing machine coming apart nor a thrasher being flogged in the braking. No smoke . I love the dashboards of the late 40's to mid 50's mopars at night. The rear windows are a classic stand out for me. Being a Mopar guy would really sold me was when I asked myself "Am I ever going to find a 1950 Chrysler 2 door in this condition at this price again?" Just have to skip going to Germany next year. A little late to be asking but anything that looks questionable to folks?
  23. I was going to sleep on it................... until I couldn't sleep on it.
