  1. A.J.: You really got to experience a taste of motoring better than a century ago. The only things missing were either clouds of dust, mud spattering or mired in axle-deep mud. Bet it was fun, albeit a bit damp... Thanks for taking us along. Steve

  4. One additional observation about owning an early 1930's GM car to drive and enjoy plus one possessing stellar styling: Dollar for dollar, you can't beat a 1933-'34 Pontiac!
  5. Greg: By 1932, sales had plummeted from 120K to around 40K, something had to been done. Pontiac was on the potential chopping block as Alfred Sloan and management coped with the worst of the Depression. Pontiac, which had been conceived as the next step-up in size, features and price above Chevrolet, was selling both an L-head six and the last version of the pioneering monobloc 135-degree V8 originally the Oakland engine. Small displacement straight eights were easier to manufacture and acceptable powerplants for cars a step above the "low-priced three". GM had Ben Anibal in engine development, created one of the most durable, long-lived powerplants in the industry, produced through 1954. Consolidating on this engine for 1933-'34, the next problem was styling. What had been planned was a mild restyle of the 1932 models. Fortuitously for Pontiac, GM Art & Color had recently hired Frank Hershey, fresh from the demise of Walter Murphy coachbuilders that had stellar designers who had bodied many great Classics and the majority of Duesenbergs. To say Frank Hershey was a massively talent designer would be to make gross understatement. Hershey drew on this recent experience taking inspiration from the Bentley 8-Liter for the front ensemble: radiator shell and grille, full-length hood, their vents placement, headlight positioning, all fronting Fisher bodies shared with Chevrolet on a 115" wb. The public loved it, more than doubling the sales to 90K. For `1934, the car was lengthened and refined, Pontiac had its reprieve! The 223.4 ci straight eight was enlarged to 232.3 ci for 1936, then 248.9 ci from 1937 through 1949. It was 268.2 ci for 1950-'54. The L-head six rejoined the product lines for 1935 and continued to 1954 as well. Both engines were considered among the best, most durable of their times. As a simple question, get a dissertation... 11. Here is the best I can pull PENN AUTO REPAIR out of the fade fog:
  12. Walt: What were the "four Salon jobs" displayed for 1928? Here is a Google Earth view of 40 Greenleaf Street, Rochester, NY. Note the curved right-of-way around the east side of the building, that was where the New York Central Railroad siding aligned with loading docks and doors for the finished bodies to be shipped. Below Atlantic Avenue marked "CSX' is the current operator of the New York Central Railroad trackage and a large classification yard that served a number of manufacturers in that section of the city. A subsequent user of the building was Xerox Corporation, so I was told by a former employee when I mentioned the address. Many of the coachbuilder's factory photographs taken of completed cars appear to have been driven westward on Atlantic Avenue where it meets University Avenue which along with East Avenue immediately paralleling a block south provided the appropriate upscale neighborhood backdrop seen many of the photographs. 13. Not to burst anyone's bubble, but the majority of cars Raymond Loewy took credit for were actually designed by employees of his industrial design firm Raymond Loewy Associates which provided design consultancy for a broad selection manufactured products from appliances, the Coke bottle up to streamlined steam locomotives. His initial automotive work was for Hupmobile, the 1932-'34 'cycle-fender' then the 1934-'36 Aerodynamics. Studebaker took a contract with his design firm beginning in 1936, the first cars done by the design service were the 1938 models. Although the contract was extremely expensive, Studebaker was able to remain competitive with Harley Earl's GM styling juggernaut. The contacted ended during 1955. More than anything else, Loewy was extremely good at recognizing design talent, hiring many of the best at various time including Virgil Exner, Bob Bourke, Clare Hodgman, Bob Koto, Gordon Buehrig, Bob Andrews, Tucker Madawick, John Reinhart, Jack Aldrich, Ed Hermann, Vince Gardner, Albrecht Goertz, John Epstein, Tom Kellogg and myriad others. The other skill he practiced that made this firm so influential and successful was the ability to 'sell' progressive designs to recalcitrant, conversative company managers. The results are we have a good many fine designs to appreciate now, even decades later.

Neal, the 22nd Series continued into the first part of the 1949 model year comprised cars built after November 1,1948 to April 1, 1949, when the 23rd Series 1949 models began. The Data Plate Serial No. 2252-9-#### first two digits tells us its a 22nd Series, "52" that is a Custom Eight and -9- that its a 1949 model. This was the topline Packard sedan, which was factory priced at $3,750, is powered by the nine-main-bearing 356 ci straight eight. Only 810 1949 22nd Series Custom Eight touring sedans were built.
  18. It's a 1925-'26 Packard Eight Model 243 7-passenger Sedan-Limousine. Here's a better look:
  19. A.J.: It's a 1952 Cadillac Series 62 coupe or Coupe de Ville-based customized hardtop possibly by Coachcraft or another West Coast coachbuilder. In the heady postwar period of rising prosperity when Cadillac was the premiere choice in status symbol luxury many had their production Fisher and Fleetwood-bodied Cadillacs customized to configuration which would stand out from the ordinary. There was something of a cottage industry catering to the varying tastes of these clients. Station Wagons, 2-passenger coupes and roadsters were all ginned up in that era. Most disappeared in the used car market afterwards. I checked the New Cadillac Database to see if this one appears but must have been missed. I'd opine that Palm Springs was the location of this photograph since it was the glamorous hide-away for celebrities and other luminaries. 20. Great motorcar, glad AACA has become its conservator. Interesting to consider that Oldsmobile progressed from the diminutive Curve-Dash Olds to the Limited within a decade. For a brief interlude, the prosperous gent with $5-7K for a proper motorcar might consider a Locomobile, Lozier, Pierce-Arrow, Packard, Peerless, Chadwick, Austin, Simplex and ... Oldsmobile!

(craigslist.org) Seller's Description: I am selling my 1962 Pontiac Tempest Lemans sports coupe 4x4x4. The 4x4x4 means 4-cylinder, 4 speed, 4-barrel carburetor. It moves and looks pretty good for being 61 years old. The red interior is in great shape, but the front seats need recovered. This car has half of the 389 V8. The combination of the 4 cyl. and 4-barrel carb with the 4-speed manual is pretty rare. The miles show 52K miles, but I cannot verify that. I am asking $7,500.00 or best offer.
