  6. These are two of the four Briggs Manufacturing Co. rear-engine prototypes designed by John Tjaarda that led to the Lincoln-Zephyr. The upper image is the functional prototype No. 4, the lower image is the wooden mock-up prototype No. 1 that was shown to the public at the 1933-'34 Century of Progress in Chicago.
  7. Doubtful it was a real car, more likely a mock-up prop on some ordinary chassis the studio ginned-up for only this movie.
  8. This '56 Packard Caribbean convertible #276 is indeed the very last Packard convertible built. It appeared at the Packard Centennial in 1999 at Warren, Ohio where the Packard production began before moving to Detroit in 1903.
  9. Alfred Sloan and Nickolas Dreystadt held no illusions that the Cadillac Series 60 or 61 were cars anyone would ever consider to be Cadillac's best or a Classic, whatever definition that might denote. The primary purpose it fulfilled like an Olympic champion was to be a springboard year-by-year to return Cadillacs to the position of volume luxury segment sales leader and attendant profitability. The fact that they vanquished Packard's at one time dominance of the luxury segment was simply icing on the cake.
  10. The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, Edited by John Gunnell states 6,367 1963 Buick Electra 225 convertibles built.
  11. What is surprising about the all-new 1949 Mopar cars is how many have bodies that are unique to a single make and model like the bustle-back Dodge Wayfarer two-door sedan. Pre-war and post-war through the first-series 1949 Mopar cars were champions of body sharing and interchangeability over their complete product lines.

  13. For Sale: 1941 Studebaker President Eight Skyway Land Cruiser - Ambitious Project - $8,000 - Clint, TX - Still Available, Minor Price Reduction to $6,000: 5-13-2024. See New Link Below. 1942 Studebaker President - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: This is a great car to restore, it is 90% complete. As far as I can tell the radio and the trunk release handle are missing. The body is almost perfect, meaning that there are virtually no dents in the body and only surface rust. The rear fender on the passenger side is dented. You need to see it to see how nice the car is. I would like to have the buyer restore the car rather than see a street rod made out of it, but that will be your call. The engine is the original flat head straight eight that turns over and was running when I purchased it 2yrs. ago. The odometer reading may or may not be correct. It has not been fired up since. If you have any questions please call me as texting does not convey information very well. Thanks. Also to purchase please: In person and cash only. Note: The 1941 Studebaker President Eight Skyway Land Cruiser 4dr Sedan was the topline model at $1,260. The production for all three 1941 Studebaker President Eight body styles was 6,994 cars. Richard Quinn, editor emeritous of the "Antique Studebaker Review", publication of the Antique Studebaker Club, researched the production orders for all 1938 through 1942 Studebaker Commanders and Presidents. Mr. Quinn reported in his article titled "How Many Were Made? A Statistical Breakdown of President and Commander Production 1938-1942" July/August 2009, pages 18-24. Production for the 1941 Studebaker President Skyway Land Cruiser, Model 7C, Body Symbol B7 was 1,251 cars. Although no number of survivors of this model have been reported, perhaps a dozen cars in all states of condition would be a realistic assumption. Here is a Curbside Classics article on the 1941-'42 Studebaker President Skyway models: Curbside Classic: 1941 Studebaker President Skyway Cruising Sedan – The Ex President | Curbside Classic
  14. This 1955 Imperial has appeared at a local car show I attended, appears to be a well-preserved, mostly original example. The leather seating surfaces might be savable with conditioner and crease filler which is available. The Imperial-specific cloth inserts could use a gentle cleaning but are also surprisingly not torn or threadbare. The horn ring will be an expensive and difficult part to replace, may require re-casting in a more durable material. But, for a Northeast car, this is an exceptionally well-preserved one, we're used to much worse.
  15. Crusty: The 1936-1938 years of the entry-level Cadillac were Series 60. As mentioned, they shared with other upper-medium-priced GM makes, specifically the B-Body and chassis components. The Cadillac 60, LaSalle and Buick Century coupes had among the best power-to-weight ratios, were considered 'a gentlemen's hot rod' in the era. The B-Body Cadillacs became the Series 61 for 1939, took a hiatus for 1940, then returned for 1941 to replace LaSalle in the price segment a step below the Series 62, also as an alternative choice to the Buick Roadmaster Series 70. The primary thing to understand about what was happening to Cadillac and LaSalle in the latter years of the 1930's up to the advent of WWII was the days of lavish, cost-be-damned luxury cars were largely over when Nicholas Dreystadt became Cadillac general manager in 1934. His mandate was to return Cadillac to being a profitable division while developing new, smaller mass-market luxury cars that would sell in volume yet still uphold the Cadillac reputation for quality and prestige. Dreystadt accomplished his mandate with Prussian efficiency, Cadillac sold 12,913 for 1936; for 1941: 66,169. During the intervening years, he had ended the OHV V-12 and V-16, consolidated the L-head V-16 onto the 75 chassis then ended the V-16 for good, had instituted significant component sharing with Olds and Buick, brought LaSalle customers along to eventually fold them into the Cadillac fraternity. And probably caused a pleasant grimace on dour Alfred Sloan's face when the subject of Cadillac profitability was the matter under discussion. Ask a simple question...get a dissertation... Steve
