Guest Rivdog
Hi, can anyone decode this one for me? Is it an "early 65" or not? Thanks
sean1997
494475H945716 4 = Buick94 = Riviera47 = 2-door hardtop sport coupe5 = 1965 model yearH = built at Flint, MI945716 = sequential number, range was 900,001 to 955,278 for Flint, MI built Riviera and Wildcats for 1965 This car was built later in the model year. Build date on the body tag is probably 06B for June 1965 (06), second week ( B ). The latest 1965 Rivi I've seen has 07D on the body tag and last 6 digits of the VIN is 955244. RivNut
The Fisher Body data plate on the firewall above the brake booster will tell you more than the VIN. Post a picture of it and we'll decode it for you . Build date, color, trim, FB number, options, etc. The build date will be the most critical detail for telling you whether it's an early car. RivNut
I forgot to mention that the FB number is the sequence number for ALL models built at Fisher Body in Flint, MI. FB numbers for '63 and '64 are for Rivieras models only. Hence FB numbers are much smaller for 63 and 64 (5 digits)
petelempert
Does anybody know if the body plate was painted (underhood black) or left natural metal color from the factory? PRL
Seafoam65
On 65's the body plate wasn't painted......don't know what they did on your 63. On 65's the plate wasinstalled before the firewall was painted black, but it was sloppily masked off to keep the black paint off of it.
petelempert
On my 63 it currently looks natural, but sloppy with some black overspray around the edges. My OCD tendencies have caused me to go at it with some solvent to try to clean it up. It still doesn't look great but I'll never pull it off to clean it. Until today, I was wanting to blame a previous rattle can happy owner. Now, I am considering shifting blame to GM. PRL
Guest Rivdog
Don't pull it off! Mine is covered with red repaint over spray. It looks great!
steelman
Pete, when was your 63 built? 63s built before the Christmas break in 62 had body colored firewalls. When production resumed in January of 63, firewalls were then painted black. I know you know this, just a refresher.
petelempert
I'm a mid production, post Christmas, black firewall, overspray kind of guy. Not gonna do anything to it. Just need to holster my OCD tendencies or focus them elsewhere on the car. PRL
tenugent
Steelman,my 63 has a black firewall-12D. p.m. Did they shut the lines down till Jan?T.N.12969...
steelman
Tim, if I could maneuver around the new forum, I could find the post a couple years ago where this was discussed. I hate this new forum. Can't find anything. Search is worthless. Maybe I need to retract my statement from post #14 above. Can't back it up. RivNut
Rivdog, When you asked to have your data plate decoded, I mentioned that not all options were listed on the data plate. After seeing pictures of your interior with the seats moved back, I can tell you of one other option that your car has. The ribbed rocker moldings were an option on cars that came equipped with the standard interior package. Your car is a good example of this. RivNut
Dave22. First if all welcome. This particular forum is for the Buick Rivera "models" built between 1963 and 1999. Your 1949 is a Riviera 'style' in ether one of three "models" - Special, Super, or Roadmaster. You'll have much better luck finding help with your question if you'll post it in either the Buick General forum or Buick Introduce Yourself forum. Good Luck.
