4 = Buick

94 = Riviera

47 = 2-door hardtop sport coupe

5 = 1965 model year

H = built at Flint, MI

945716 = sequential number, range was 900,001 to 955,278 for Flint, MI built Riviera and Wildcats for 1965

This car was built later in the model year.  Build date on the body tag is probably 06B for June 1965 (06), second week ( B ).  The latest 1965 Rivi I've seen has 07D on the body tag and last 6 digits of the VIN is 955244.

The Fisher Body data plate on the firewall above the brake booster will tell you more than the VIN.  Post a picture of it and we'll decode it for you .  Build date, color, trim, FB number, options, etc.  The build date will be the most critical detail for telling you whether it's an early car.

Here's the break down:

06B - built 2nd week B of June

65-49447:  65 - year, 4 - Buick, 94 - RIviera, 47 - 2 door hardtop

609 - Saddle Vinyl

VV - Shell Beige paint

Group 1 (no 1 in identifier)

W - Tint - windshield only

X - Power window

S- Auto trunk release

Group 2

R - Rear speaker

Group 3

T - Rear arm rest

Group 4

F - Remote mirror

Group 5

K - Door edge guard

W - Seat belts w/ retractor

All of this information is on the ROA's website in the Member's Only section

The options listed are only options in the back half of the car while it was in Flint.  Other options could be added at final assembly; those won't be on the data plate.  For example: Four note horns, etc.: Anything that could be pulled from a parts bin and bolted on without any special screw holes, bolt hole, tabs, etc.  Which radio? Cruise control? Wheel Covers, Tires, Guidematic, etc.

On my 63 it currently looks natural, but sloppy with some black overspray around the edges. My OCD tendencies have caused me to go at it with some solvent to try to clean it up. It still doesn't look great but I'll never pull it off to clean it. Until today, I was wanting to blame a previous rattle can happy owner. Now, I am considering shifting blame to GM. PRL

Rivdog,

When you asked to have your data plate decoded,  I mentioned that not all options were listed on the data plate.  After seeing pictures of your interior with the seats moved back, I can tell you of one other option that your car has.  The ribbed rocker moldings were an option on cars that came equipped with the standard interior package.  Your car is a good example of this.

Dave22.  First if all welcome.  This particular forum is for the Buick Rivera "models" built between 1963 and 1999.  Your 1949 is a Riviera 'style' in ether one of three "models" - Special, Super, or Roadmaster.  You'll have much better luck finding help with your question if you'll post it in either the Buick General forum or Buick Introduce Yourself forum. Good Luck.
