1952 76R rarety?

Hi all

Just bought a manifold on Ebay for my 52 Roadmaster 76R from a very nice guy in Maryland.

He asked about my car on commented on its rarity.

I know it's the only one here in Denmark and probably Scandinavia, but that's not odd.

What I did find odd was that of 11,387 built so few should have survived. When I think about it, I've seen plenty of 72R (four doors) but very very few 2 doors.

Does anyone have an approx. of 76Rs still around?

And if it really is a rare car, what should it be insured for?

That is a gorgeous automobile! You are very lucky to have found an exhaust manifold for it. Those 4-barrel straight 8 manifolds are nearly impossible to find. There are only 12 of the 1952 76-R Buicks listed in the current BCA Membership Roster. I don't know why so few are around--perhaps owners got rid of them early due to the cracked manifolds??

I just thought of another reason why so few of these are left. The 4-door sedans have manual windows and seat, but don't the 2-door hardtops and convertibles have power windows and power seat? After a car with hydraulic power windows and power seat got a few years old, not many owners had the patience or wanted to spend the funds necessary to get those hydraulic cylinders and pump systems rebuilt or repaired. So, I think many were junked because of that.

Value? I would say insure it for at least $15,000 minimum, if the interior and engine are as nice as the exterior.

Of course you have point with the intricate mechanics of the car being a reason for fasing them out, but another reason someone speculated on, was that top models were bought by the rich, who would have traded in much earlier for the newer V8's with powersteering and brakes. Those who bought the 3-ports would have taken much more care of their cars as they represented a greater value for them. And who would want a used totally outdated topmodal?

Anyway I'm very happy for the car, especially as Bjorn did a fantastic job on the hydrolics and engine ( read more here )

I'll try next week to write out a story for "Me and My Buick"

BTW how can I look up in the "BCA Membership Roster"? I would love to get in touch with some of the other owners and see if I can get some detailed pictures of door-openings, under-dash, trunk etc.

Hi Eric yeah this is a good looking car and as I’m also a owner of 52 Buick the very same model as you have I now there’s only 3 registered her in Sweden so it’s a very odd car.

I had mine for only a year and I’m now beginning to renovate it the paint is patinated don’t know for sure if it is the original paint but its looked that way.

This car is rely a pleasure to drive I drive 35 Swedish mile this summer to a-bombers and when I get out from the car it was like I have been rested don’t feel any hurt in my back this is odd just like driving a new car.

But I do have a big problem with the Hydraulic pump and windows I need a wire diagram for this I know this it’s very hard to find so anyone out there help me I now they have a simulare system on outers GM cars from this period.

So any one give me a hint about this wire diagram for the hydra electric system.

Original production numbers are 11,387

The number of cars registered in the Bugle can give you some indication of the scarcity of your car, but remember just because people own a Buick doesn't mean they belong to the BCA or any club for that matter,

I would venture to say that far more classic Buick owners do not belong to the BCA than do belong to the BCA and that is nothing against the BCA, it's that many people are just not into the club thing.

With all that said, your car is still a rather scarce model.

I would also feel that Pete may be a bit low on his Insurance Value. Check all the old car price guides, auction results, etc. It will be hard to find any that are for sale but you can use 1950's thru even 53's that are for sale as a bit of a guide. You may even want to spend a couple dollars and have it appraised to get a stated value.

2007 values...appraisal is always a reasonable idea.

Great to have you aboard.

I don't think there is an actual wiring diagram for the hydraulics.

If you don't have a manual - get one :) or read it online: Team Buick Reference

On page 10-97 fig 10-122 (http://www.teambuick.com/reference/library/52_shop/files/10-j.pdf)

you can see a scematic of where the wiring runs, but thats about it.

You have to get information about outher owners for the BCA Roster. This is one advantage of joining he BCA plus the Buick Bugle. We are putting together a new Roster now, so If you want to be in it, you need to join this month.

The BCA Office sends it out when they receive the Bugle via the normal US Post - that way, the international members get it in a similar time frame as members in the USA. Of course, that doesn't stop folks like Centurion, who has the premium mail option, from getting the Bugle before the rest of us, and posting about it, making the rest of us think it is late....:D

No premium mail option at my house. I reckon the U.S. Postal Service must be more efficient in my area than in some other parts of the country!

The premium delivery option for the Bugle...in case I wasn't clear...according to Mike that's why you were posting about the Bugle and nobody else had received it.

Of course, that still doesn't explain to me why you get yours all the way over on the left coast before anyone else in between....

This tread is several years old - It's about time somebody hijacked it.

The only reason it was revived was because our new Swedish Buick owner/freind Johan aka Highlow asked for advice and nobody has been able to help him.

Feel a little sorry for him.

Doesn't anyone have a wiring diagram for the hydaulics???

I'm following up on it to see how complete it is.

Maybe I'll own two 1952 76Cs!

I might make up 30% of all 52 Buick 76C owners! Ha-Ha!!

I know where there is a 52 or 53 Super Convertible in Minneapolis - sitting in some guys boneyard. He said it is all complete minus the front windshield frame. Apparently his son was cleaning the snow with a Caterpillar and drove over the top of the car crushing the top posts! But it is still there pretty much in tact.

Hey Derek, nice to hear from you again. I have parts cars for all the Buicks in my stable - I just don't list them in my roster. So much easier and cheaper to buy a complete 4dr with little rust and scavenge the parts one by one than pay an arm and leg and crazy shipping costs for a piece here and there on eBay. As long as a guy has the room for a couple of lawn ornaments! I'm pondering now which Buick to restore first. The 57 Chev keeps staring at me with sad eyes... its a toss up. So many cars, so little time. I would be nice to hire my own body man full time and let him go nuts in my shop and see what he can get done in a year.
