Centurion
One of my local Buick friends owns an original 1951 Buick Super Estate Wagon that he will be driving to a woody meet in California this summer. The original brake drums have been turned as many times as possible, and he's been advised that a new set of brake drums is needed. Can anyone point us to the appropriate sources for new replacements or excellent used brake drums? Did the Roadmaster series cars utilize the same drums as the Supers? Thanks for your help. Bill Stoneberg
There is a gentleman name Keith something up in your part of the woods that seem to have lots of Buick Parts. Also Buick World seems to have a lot of that stuff.I have a set of driums from a 50 that would be usable (I think) if you want to pay shipping. Other then those places, how about Katners ? Pete Phillips
I think Bill means Kanter's in New Jersey. Their prices are a bit high, but if that's all you can find..... You might also try Ken Reeves at Wheatbelt Auto Parts, which is an all Buick salvage place in Oklahoma. His prices are quite reasonable, but of course, the drums will be used. wheatbelt@myexcel.com Pete Phillips, BCA #7338
Centurion
Bill and Pete, thanks for the leads. We'll follow up on these sources.
critterpainter
Bill S is referring to Kieth Bingham somewhere in washington state. I have seen both 1 3/4 and 2" wide brakes on 51 buicks. (there was an option in the early 50's for "heavy duty" brakes)

Pete O
My Motor shop manual shows that the 2" wide linings were on the series 70 cars, and the 1 3/4 were on the 40 and 50 series. So more than likely, Roadmaster drums wouldn't fit on a Super.
The Old Guy
The Roadmaster drums will work, and give you much better braking on the Super, but you must also change the backing plates. I have the 2 inch on my 40, and I feel safer with the better brakes.

Guest BernieDaily
I had a 1956 Olds that needed brake drums. The originals were a two piece afiar that were hard to find. I did some research and found late 1960's Olds rear brakes were the same dimensions. The wheel bolt patern was 5 X 5 aand the only thing keeping them from going on was a flare on the edge of the drum. A machine shop trimmed the drums up in a lathe and I was on the road again. The research is not hard and very rewarding.Bernie
Patrick W. Brooks
Good Morning: Have you found the brake drums you need? Believe I have the correct drums and they have been turned and would be ready to install. Call me at 641-753-9134 evenings. Am in Iowa. Patrick W. Centurion
Pat, thanks for your reply. We've found the needed parts for the '51, which will begin its drive to "Woodies on the Wharf" in California next week.
Pete O
I'm looking for a pair of good drums. Do you know what the diameters measure on the drums that you have? If possible, would you have the measurement accurate to the thousandth of an inch?ThanksPete
