1966 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible - $17,800 (ALTADENA CA)

Recommended Posts

Looks like a nice car, needs some cosmetics.  Has A/C, FM and Cruise as a 98 should

NOT MINE.

Your dads car !
Great car for a great price...runs very well, new carburetor and fuel pump, just drove from Oceanside to San Gabriel... starts and drives well. Very low original mileage. Just needs paint and re-chroming of the front and back chrome bumpers. If painted this car would be selling for $25,000. Apart from those 2 items, this is a rare find!

Easy pass on this one at $17k.  Paint will be $14,000 or so ( includes prep, etc) and you will rechrome when bumpers are off.  That will be $4,000.  Black interior looks ok. But as noted, that would be hot.  I’ll bet you the AC “just needs a charge “

But, once you buy it for 17k and paint it for 14k you can sell it for 25K.

That's an air pump at 7:00, so 9:00 is probably a muffler. 3:00 looks like cruise control.

Correct.
The “muffler” is the air intake and filter for the new for 1966, California required Air Injection Reactor system.  (Smog pump)

Not used in all 50 states and frequently removed, I had difficulty getting all the correct components for my 1966 Mercury.

The cruise control is a Perfect Circle Speedostat.  The first true speed control system. It was invented by a blind man and first offered on 1958 Mopars, later used by most everyone.

What are the two components at approximately 9:00 and 3:00 to the air cleaner?

Do they have something to do with the smog system?

California car with K-19 Air Injection Reactor. Smog pump in other words.

The piece at 9:00 is the smog pump's fresh air intake and silencer. Can't see if all the air injector piping and manifolds are intact but since it's a California car they probably are.

I can't see the thermostatic vacuum switch that's supposed to be in the thermostat bypass hose on airconditioned cars. It was used only in 1966-67 and was later moved to a threaded port in the intake manifold coolant crossover passage. Obsolete for decades and probably just got eliminated if it failed.

3:00 is the Cruise Control's electric drive motor.
