Yellow Packard question

Guess what, the yellow Packard owner (at least on a website) has chosen to respond to my direct questions one of which was a picture of the serial plate. His response contained no picture but he did post a serial number which is:167783. Now for the Packard guys among us, does that provided number call out a 1929 Packard 640? I will be awful surprised if it does.

Al

Yes. That falls within 640 numbers.

They just copied the serial number from the original sales listing here:  https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1303932/1929-packard-640-for-sale-in-stuart-florida-34997

I found that by doing an image search on Google.  And kudos for Classic Cars for the warning that they have posted on the listing.

One potential issue is that the entire offending website could in some cases be a scam.

Al,

Trovit is a search engine that picks up all kinds of classified ads and sites - some legitimate and some not. Among the sites it picks up is a site called “US Classifieds4All”.

This site has a very bad rating. It may have some legitimate ads on it, but it is also loaded with scams. The asking prices will make you drool. Go ahead and drool, but don’t buy. Here are three examples. The first I know is a scam; I’m guessing from the way the ads are written and the asking prices that the other two are, also. I'm drooling over the 1934 model, but like the others, also.

That is the very thing I noticed on the subject yellow Packard 640.  I don't really like censorship but the ethics behind sites like TROVIT should be much more safe.  I wish I knew how to do that and I would certainly help.  Buyer beware.

The sad thing about all of this "SCAM" stuff is that those folks who permeate that mind set are doing this practice on purpose to fraudulently, in a premeditated fashion steal from anyone and should find some time in prison to straighten out their thinking.

I looked at this car in Stuart, FL in Nov 2021.  If I remember correctly, it was advertised in Hemmings MN at the time.  The owner had passed away, leaving a somewhat extensive and eclectic collection which the caretaker was trying to sell for the widow one at a time.  I believe it was listed for $39k, reduced to $25k, but he said he'd take $22k for it.  All 6 tires were badly dry rotted.  I was turned off by the alternator.  Otherwise, the car started easily and ran fine.  The seller believed the car had been a former White House staff debutant car, but the owner had been unable to produce provenance to back it up.  I took many pictures of it, but then finally decided not to buy it, as at the time there were 115 CCCA Full Classic Packards in Florida, and I wasn't excited about having the 116th..unless it was a one-of-a-kind, drop-dead gorgeous car.  So I walked away.  I've still got mixed emotions of whether I should have bought it or not.  Some of the original ad pictures are attached, along with some which I took.

 Regards,

George

Hello George,

Do you know what happened to or where this subject of a scam is not located? Did it stay in Florida?

Thanks for your post.

Al

Hey Al,

I don't know.  I left the seller hanging for several days after looking at it, then emailed him and said I was going to pass.  Haven't heard from him or any more about the car since.  Often wondered, but didn't pursue it any further.  Like I said, I still have mixed emotions about not buying it.  I've never regretted buying a car, but many, many, times have regretted not buying one...and this is one of them.

Regards,

George
