Frank Falconeri
The reverse lights on my 1957 Buick Special do not work when I put it into reverse, is this a separate circuit from the light switch in the dash which also has gone bad incidentally and waiting for a new arrival
rocketraider
Pretty sure it's a separate circuit. Look at the fuse box and see if there's a cavity labeled "back-up" "b/u" or similar. A factory shop manual with wiring diagram will help here and is an essential purchase for any new-to-you car. Also look at the lower end of the steering column for a switch, or under the car on the transmission shift linkage. It's possible the car never had them. They were extra-cost option on many cars on into the 1960s.
Bhigdog
My service manual shows the back up and brake warning lite are on a common fuse. Check your park brake on warning lite. If it is inop the problem likely is the fuse. If blown, what caused it to blow is a whole nother kettle of fish.............Bob Edited November 23, 2022 by Bhigdog (see edit history)

NailheadBob
I have a friend purchased a 1957 Buick Special and it did not come from factory with back up lights, he purchased them from Frank Lyle in Colorado “the 58 Buick man” and installed them, found the wires taped up in rear panel, connected wires and Wala he has back up lights Bob
Larry Schramm
Back up lights for GM on many cars were options up to the mid 60's. Just like heaters, etc...

Jolly_John
Hi, Frank. As rocketraider suggested, you'll definitely benefit from buying the '57 factory shop manual, if you don't currently have one. Will save you time, and mean less need to post for help on simple stuff.
