1928 Packard 526 6 cylinder. I’ve noticed a slight engine knock at start up.

I have revived a 1928 Packard 526 6 cylinder car this year. She has been running great. These last few cold mornings I’ve noticed a slight engine knock at start up. It seems to go away as the oil pressure builds. I am running straight 30 wt oil. Is this as simple as change the oil for 10/30? Or am I looking at some engine work.

Thanks,

Gary

  • Peter Gariepy changed the title to 1928 Packard 526 6 cylinder. I’ve noticed a slight engine knock at start up.

Why only 30? These old glorified "farm implements" need a heavier shield of oil. Modern engines run 5W 30, modern engines have tight clearances, these old girls have big ones because of how things expand. Step up to 10W 40, you won't hurt a thing. 30 was for very cold climates. If in doubt consult a service manual. I run 50 in old engines with miles on em. No issues, full stop. Well only 1 issue, the oil pressure builds quicker and stays on hot days. Your results may vary, tax n title extra, void where prohibited, see your retailer for details, no purchase necessary...😉

I run Penrite Shelsley medium in the Cadillac which is something like 25-70

They have a light as well which is 20-60

Their heavy is 40-70 which would be for pretty specific applications I would have thought (they recommend it for sleeve valve engines for instance)

Also has extra zinc added
