bjfox1970
I just purchased a '60 Electra Flattop. The car had been sitting many years and the previous owner bought it non-running as well. Got the motor to fire up and idle. The car rolls even though the gear selector is in park. When I attempted to put it in neutral with the car running. The transmission made all kinds of "bad" noises. Tried drive, same thing. I ran across another dynaflow out of a '62 LeSabre for sale that is supposed to be in good order. I know the '62 was an open driveline as opposed to the '60 torque tube design. Are the rear sections of the transmissions interchangeable? Are there any other differences that would cause problems with a swap out?
EmTee
Did you check the shift linkage adjustment? 1

60FlatTop
What's a bad noise? There is a u-joint inside the torque tube housing just ahead of the third member. That could do some clanking if it broke. They will whine and whirl but I never considered those to be bad noises.
bjfox1970
Definitely sounds like something is broken. I was thinking maybe the parking prawl broke off in the transmission and is banging around in there?? Haven't had a chance to pull the tailshaft off yet to inspect. Smartin
I had a very similar problem with a 57 I had a couple years ago. If I put it in gear, it sounded very metallic and grinding/slipping. Ended up being the rear splines on the driveshaft that engage the rear end were stripped out.
Smartin
Jack up the rear end and roll the wheels by hand. Listen for a sound.
