1989 Cadillac Brougham, Michigan, Unusual Color Combination

In today's sea of gray lookalikes, you might appreciate

something a little different.  Cadillac Broughams (formerly

Fleetwoods) can be found, but this tasteful color combination

is distinctive.  It's sort of an orange-tan with a gold vinyl roof,

an unexpected combination that is still in good taste.

 

The car is said to have 56,000 miles and be in Mount Clemens,

Michigan.  The dealer's asking price of $12,900 is, I think, within

realistic negotiating range.  While earlier years had the problematic

4.1-liter engine, this car has the good 307 cubic inch (5.0 liter).

I like the color, it is a break from all the silver, blue, and white cars. The simpler, tan upholstery is also nice. My Father in Law had one with the V8-6-4 motor, an '81 I believe. He had that system de-activated so it would run on all 8 cylinders all the time. It was a 368 cube motor, if I remember correctly.  I knew a lot of older guys at work who had HT4100 powered cars and they had a lot of trouble with them. The 4.5 and especially the 4.9 ended all that before they went to the Chevy and Olds motors.

Do you mean that the problems ended when the 4.5- and 4.9-liter

engines came out?  If so, that's good to hear.

 

It's always satisfying when a good-looking car has good reliability too.

Nice condition, color is a personal thing.  "Old man tan" to me. But that was this car's demographic when new.

I like it. Dad had an olds 98 about the same colour combo. My grandmother always had Fleetwood Broughm, the last I remember was a very dark red. I think she had one that was brown.

I like the look of the slick top. Not sure about the colors though. They might look better in person.

Here in August, the 1989 Cadillac is still available,

with the same asking price.  According to the

carsforsale.com website, the ad was placed on March 9.

I like it.  I drove an 89 that my wife inherited for a few years back and forth to work.  Nice car.    But was leather an option?  I don't remember the velour.

I don't know whether leather cost extra, but both

velour seats and leather seats were available.

Having viewed many, many Cadillac ads, I would estimate

that for 1977-89 DeVilles and Fleetwoods, about 60% were

leather and 40% were velour.  Leather was becoming more

and more popular during those years.

 

One advantage with velour is that it wears extremely well.

Leather, in contrast, shows creases readily, even on

low-mileage cars, making one's seats look less than pristine.

The flip side is that leather cleans and velour doesn't.    It actually blows my mind that they were putting velour in late 70s trans-ams and Z28s.  I will not buy a car with velour,  even an every day car.

Interestingly, this car is now for sale by a different dealer,

who is asking $10,900.  The mileage is the same, as are a

couple of identifying imperfections--discolorations on the

vinyl roof.  So it's exactly the same car.

Looks very clean for 56K miles; it was obviously pampered by its owner(s).  The problem is this is a large car and is part of an era that will appeal to a very small, specific type of collector.  It will likely sell for well under $10K...
