1989 Cadillac Brougham, Michigan, Unusual Color Combination

Recommended Posts

In today's sea of gray lookalikes, you might appreciate

something a little different.  Cadillac Broughams (formerly

Fleetwoods) can be found, but this tasteful color combination

is distinctive.  It's sort of an orange-tan with a gold vinyl roof,

an unexpected combination that is still in good taste.

The car is said to have 56,000 miles and be in Mount Clemens,

Michigan.  The dealer's asking price of $12,900 is, I think, within

realistic negotiating range.  While earlier years had the problematic

4.1-liter engine, this car has the good 307 cubic inch (5.0 liter).

Do fellow forum-goers like this color combination?  Or is it too

bland or too unusual?

I like the color, it is a break from all the silver, blue, and white cars. The simpler, tan upholstery is also nice. My Father in Law had one with the V8-6-4 motor, an '81 I believe. He had that system de-activated so it would run on all 8 cylinders all the time. It was a 368 cube motor, if I remember correctly.  I knew a lot of older guys at work who had HT4100 powered cars and they had a lot of trouble with them. The 4.5 and especially the 4.9 ended all that before they went to the Chevy and Olds motors.

Do you mean that the problems ended when the 4.5- and 4.9-liter

engines came out?  If so, that's good to hear.

It's always satisfying when a good-looking car has good reliability too.

I like the look of the slick top. Not sure about the colors though. They might look better in person.

As "bryankazmer" stated, "color is a personal thing." I agree.

The car is still available from the same dealer.

Maybe the buyer didn't follow through properly.

The asking price is down a bit to $11,900:

Says the ad, "We are so excited to offer for sale this incredibly clean 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham with just 56k original miles! It is cars like this one where Cadillac coined the term the standard of the world with its amazing luxury vehicles which drive like you are floating on a cloud. They just don't make these full size American luxury flagship vehicles anymore so owning something like this puts your mind into another era with its distinct style and opulence. This vehicle features its powerful 5.0 liter V8 engine, smooth shifting automatic overdrive transmission, super clean velour upholstery, plus carpets, wood grain accents throughout, premium sound system, ice cold a/c, full power package, all its original chrome, all its original glass, perfect fillers, wire wheel hubcaps, brand new white wall tires, brand new alternator, fully serviced with all new fluids, and all its original keys. The vehicle is just stunning with all its original paint which shows just one blemish on the driver's side fender but there are no swirl marks, non damage, no rock chips and no decay. The brown vinyl top is also in fantastic condition with no tears, no damage, and no treads missing. The interior is pure Cadillac with its plush soft velour showing no stains, no damage, no rips, and no tears. Only one opera light is missing on the driver's side b-pillar but the car is just so original we did not want to risk damaging the paint or the vinyl top to chance saving the lens. You have a completely sorted out ready to enjoy fantastic collectible which is rising in value everyday ready to go to cruise nights and car shows with your family. Please let us know if you would like to see any additional images, would like a video of the vehicle running, would like to schedule a real time FaceTime call to see the vehicle live, or would like to schedule your own inspection or appraisal prior to purchase. But was leather an option?  I don't remember the velour.

I don't know whether leather cost extra, but both

velour seats and leather seats were available.

Having viewed many, many Cadillac ads, I would estimate

that for 1977-89 DeVilles and Fleetwoods, about 60% were

leather and 40% were velour.  Leather was becoming more

and more popular during those years.

One advantage with velour is that it wears extremely well.

Leather, in contrast, shows creases readily, even on

low-mileage cars, making one's seats look less than pristine.

The flip side is that leather cleans and velour doesn't.    It actually blows my mind that they were putting velour in late 70s trans-ams and Z28s.  I will not buy a car with velour,  even an every day car.

Interestingly, this car is now for sale by a different dealer,

who is asking $10,900.  The mileage is the same, as are a

couple of identifying imperfections--discolorations on the

vinyl roof.  So it's exactly the same car.

This shows how cars may not find homes, but only go from

one dealer to another:

Looks very clean for 56K miles; it was obviously pampered by its owner(s).  The problem is this is a large car and is part of an era that will appeal to a very small, specific type of collector.  It will likely sell for well under $10K...
