Here we have what is becoming rare a 54 glass top runs and drives grate looks cool, a local older restoration, it came with a 239 but now has the 312 v8, I would place it as grate driver/show car not a trailer queen going out for Sunday drives, you either love or hate the color but it sure gets attention. The car has been in a long standing private collection and is now ready for a new caretaker. Call for more details no texts no emails I will not respond 406 two five zero 7003.

Having a '54 Skyliner hardtop would be very cool. You could drive around (in late spring) with the windows down listening  to Sinatra. 😉At least they kept the 312 kind of looking like the 239.

 

I should know this but I don't: did they offer dual exhaust in '54? I assume they did on the Interceptor, but I'm talking about civilian cars. And if so, did the dual exhaust have the crossover pipe in the front? I was thinking that not having a front crossover kept this from looking factory, but then I wondered about factory duals.

 

I really like the color. One of those colors that only looks good on '50's cars. I recently saw a similar color on a mid-60's T-Bird on the not mine forum, and I thought it didn't look quite right.

I had a '54 Mercury Sun Valley with the same transparent top. It looked good from the outside but looking up through the top from inside, it was very hazy. There were long hair-line cracks all through the curved areas. The flat area in the middle was better, but still not clear, and that was many years ago. I have seen others with the original plastic top that had the same problem. At one time repro tops were available, but I don't know if you can get them anymore - and they probably aren't cheap.

There was also a snap-in headliner that was supplied with these cars that kept the hot sun off your head and kept the interior somewhat cooler - especially with the windows up. These cars tend to be real ovens.

Anyone considering this car should get good clear pictures of the plastic top or, better yet look at it personally. Since the seller did not picture or mention the condition of the top, I would be very cautious.

The original Ford name for this color was "Cameo Coral".  Quite radical for 1954, but appropriate for the era. 

In a 1954 Ford Times magazine was a story about a Motel owner who was enamored with the color when he first saw it at the dealer. He liked it so much that he wrote to Ford for the formula and had it mixed in building paint and painted his Motel in the color. They included a picture of the Motel and a new 54 Victoria.

I was able to get all the 6 volt components I needed to rewire my Ford a couple of years ago, but I'm wondering if the later engine necessitated going to 12 v. As far as the non-original engine goes,  I sometimes wonder what I'll do if the original 239 in my '54 ever bites the dust. I like original stuff, but I've been told by experienced Ford Y-block guys that the first year 239's are a hassle to sort out in a rebuild. Apparently, some rebuild kits for the 239 won't work on the earliest versions of the engine due to things like different sized cam journals...or some such thing. Some specs were apparently changed during '54. (Maybe why the owner of this car made his engine choice?) The added oomph of a 292 or 312 could make the car a lot more usable in modern traffic, too.

The 54 Ford was strictly a 239 with 2 barrel carburetor and single exhaust (with cross over pipe). For police applications they may have used the Mercury 256 with 4 barrel carburetor and (still) single exhaust. I am not sure about that so don't take that as gospel.
