Barrett-Jackson Auction mis-information

Amphicar BUYER

Recommended Posts

While watching the auction on Speedvision, I couldn't help but laugh at all the wrong info the commentators gave out.

"442, that is 400 4 speed 2 barrel" (It does mean 400, 4 barrell, dual exhaust)

(same dark mettalic blue '67 442) "This is an all original car including the nice metalic blue paint" (not an original color and an obvious repaint and showing the auto trans shift)

(A nice yellow '70 Challenger rolls up) "Now here is a nice Barracuda ..." "no, this is a "Cuda, The Barracuda of this same year is a smaller body style" (This was as they had a full screen shot showing of the script saying "Challenger")

This is just a couple of examples I can recall. These guys are all suppose to be "car guys" and yet they toss out these inaccurate "facts" Kind of makes you wonder about the people giving them the information, where they got it from and who is checking these things out. I doesn't say much for Barrett-Jackson's people.

Yea! And Mr Keith Martin has a AutoWeek byline every week, which tells you he should know better. The Frenchman,Alan whatever, knows a few things about Europe's best, but he wasn't running the show. Still waiting to find out what PeterG bought out there. Understand him and HVS had a good time. Wayne

On some of the vehicles they were very quick to judge the exterior and interior colors and stating "not correct" when in fact they were. You would have thought they might of had a reference book close by to look up some of the facts before stating incorrect information as many TV viewers now believe there statements. Its not that they did not have time because the prime time cars were registered months ago.

The prices were way out of line for most of the vehicles, of course they only televised the high dollar prime time stuff. It will be interesting to see what the average joe vehicles sold for when I get my auction report next week. John I don't think any Amphicars crossed the block either? Will let you know once I get my report.

Thanks Ron! I looked up thier site (B/J) and it only shows 3 Amphicars last one was 1996 I believe.

Whaddya expect? these guys are hucksters who want to separate you from your money as quickly as possible so why should they be concerned with accuracy of details?

The poor {or rich!} hooples who overpay for their cars at these venues won't get any sympathy from me for being misinformed.

Confusion on the chalaenger

"(A nice yellow '70 Challenger rolls up) "Now here is a nice Barracuda ..." "no, this is a "Cuda, The Barracuda of this same year is a smaller body style" (This was as they had a full screen shot showing of the script saying "Challenger")

What was selling was a 1970 Barracuda (LEGALY). It started out as a wrecked 70 Barracuda slant six. It had had a Hemi put in to it and Challenger sheet metal put on it. Even if the sheet metal is Chalenger it is legally a Barracuda.

You are speaking of the yellow w/black stripes "Challenger" that had the wing on the back? If so how do you know this? <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

This really should concern us all. A low end car faked into a high end car and sold by a reputable auction house. I think it brought about $32k, but I am not certain. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

did anyone understand the one car of reggie's that was a nosale? it stalled at $100000 then went to $110000, they said the reserve was $175000 but was withdrawn, the car was going to sell. all of a sudden they drove the car out as a nosale. whatup? why didn't the guy with the 110 bid scream? and what about the ZL-1 with the wrong motor nosale at $275000? didn't i just see a good one recently for $180000?

Was very tempted at one point to put a Dollar bill down on a chance to win an AMC Pacer. (No lie!)

Thankfully common sense and taste kicked in. Course, I did buy a polish dog, fries and soda for $12 so there goes my common sense and taste. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Peter

P.S. Regarding Howard - he brought a box of KK <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> -- we had a great conversation on old cars, AACA and other points of interest - and he didnt complain one bit when I got lost momentarily during the drive up. Thanks Howard!
