Head Gasket Fabrication

My Haynes Light Six is most likely going to come apart. I was wondering what others have done for head gaskets? Water jet a copper shim gasket? Materials? 

What has worked for you?

Several of the gasket companies will make a custom gasket for you.

Olsens gaskets will have what you need.

I can dimension everything in a Cad file to DXF or scan to a PDF. Will they need that information?

Nope......call and order what you need, they should have a sample on hand.

Sandy Olsen says he can make a good gasket from a rubbing.  Lay a piece of brown paper on the top of the block surface and rub so that all the edges of the holes show up.  Make another rubbing from the head to get the combustion chamber shapes.  Actually, the one from the head may be enough, but having both won't hurt.  If you have dimensions, too, those will help, as will photos.  Be sure to tell Olsen's how your old gasket was made - copper/asbestos, steel shim, etc.  If you get lucky, Sandy already has the pattern for your car or even an NOS one.

 

I've been to the shop in 2018, was amazed at the almost infinite number of gaskets they have.  Sandy has bought tons, and I do mean TONS, of NOS gaskets from various places over the years.  They can make new ones quickly, too.

I confirm Gary's comments and will add that Sandy Olsen is a true hero for this hobby!

He is a great guy I just sold him some old gaskets  .
