Electra GSX Road Racer

Recommended Posts

We will run at our local track, Empire Dragway, in May in another week or two. I am looking for volunteers to hold cameras and help out. My crew, of four sons, are mostly in college or out on their own.  I'll have a better idea of a date after a few fixes are made to eliminate the relay issue.

Have to travel to Atlanta for a friend's wedding and Germany for work. It's going to he hard to squeeze in the run time but we'll find a way this Month.

Working on a constant problem of too little braking at the rear wheels. Empire Dragway does have a long run down area but we expect to do 120mph in the traps so why chance it. I have a new 1970 Corvette master cylinder on order and already have the wear shims. We'll get the best braking we can get because, despite the high drag design, she keeps going like a bullet after you let off at that speed.

and a 2 1/2 ton bullet at that!!

Never noticed the removable hood panels at the air intakes, bet that helps.

If you have a few hours to kill, Buick Gardens is only an hour and a half away, would love to have you visit and see some older Buick iron.

Buick Gardens you say? I'll have to look into that!

Dave Machuga came over to the house yesterday to help with the double inverted flaring of the brake lines. It took a few days to bench bleed the air out of the Vette MC. Then we could not get any flow past the proportioning valve. I ordered a new one this morning.

to help with the launch I received a two-step MSD rev limiter box. It will interrupt ignition in a way that is favorable to turbos. The GN guys use it to spool the turbos up and build pressure at lower engine rpm. The misfiring that occurs causes high velocity exhaust gas to be dumped; spinning the turbines faster.

After the brakes, we can then ship the car for header installation, dumping the cast iron exhaust manifolds. 12.3 sec @ 116.6 mph for a 4,800 lb car on stock un ported manifolds was good. If I eliminated the restrictions of the manifolds it would be 40 "free" hp without having to raise boost. The considerable increase of flow should help

the response of the motor as well and increase acceleration.

All of these things have added to the time line and now it looks like I will have to run in June. The good news is that she will be ready.

God Speed,

Dear Mr. Earl,

Thank you for the gracious invitation to Buick Gardens! You wouldn't happen to have '69 Electra parts growing there would ya? I need a complete red interior for my convertible! Anyway, it looks like a nice place for a Buick man and his missus to stop by for some iced tea on a hot day. 'Preciate the neighborly offer! Give me some more details about what you've got going on over there and we'll see if it's in the cards.

Thank you and best regards,

Dave Machuga and his people have been working to get Faithful Pursuit up and going. Headers replace the stock cast iron manifolds and a Corvette master cylinder and booster. I wired in the 40th Anniversary MSD box back in after having it rebuilt by MSD. Still working out some details as it did not start. FAST Box wont engage the fuel pump, I'll get into the wiring and see if there is a loose ground.

I was musing about what would Clint say if he were to street race my Buick...

Uh uh. I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six NOS shots or only five?" Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a STAGE II Buick, and  the most powerful Electra 225 in the world and would blow your doors clean off, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

Chuckle. I don't use nitrous myself but lots of Electra racers have and some probably still do.

All,

Many of you know of my interest in motorsports, my penchant for Buick automobiles, the Tuskegee Airmen and the Red Tail fighter planes they flew. Perhaps some even know I actually Road/Drag race the twin turbo 1969 Buick Electra GSX I re-designed as a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen. She was formally dedicated in 2004 at the Wings of Eagles in the presence of seven of the World War II Tuskegee heroes. Many autographs adorn her Red Tail.

Well, on Sunday July 23rd we will attempt to surpass the big Buick Electra ¼ mile record. The record has stood for 30 years. You see, back in the 1970’s & 80’s many “Sleeper” Buick Electra’s dominated the NYC street racing scene. The current heavy weight champion is a 4,700lb 700hp 1970 Buick Electra 225. Its record was documented as 11.7 Seconds with a terminal velocity of 118mph. It has stood since 1987 and was documented in CARS Illustrated magazine back then. My best time, set at Norwalk Raceway in Ohio was 12.3 Seconds at 116.6 mph. We are so close, we just needed a better launch!

Gates open at 9:30am and the admission is about $20. You can bring your own car and run it if you like for $20, what a deal! Remember to bring hearing protection!

My thanks to the many Corning volunteers who have helped out directly and indirectly to the building and support of this car including Jake Harrington, Jim Lamacchia, Jason Stewart, the late Gary Shaw, and others. We need a few volunteers to help out as well with taking video and other stuff. Look for our big white tent with Tuskegee Airmen memorabilia on the grounds.

Thank you and best regards,

I'll be hoping for a write up after this weekend where you meet or exceed your goals BQuickB)  Racing rarely goes as planned for me as I have been sidelined by lots of little gremlins more than I've succeeded:o  Whichever way it goes you'll do a nice job with your writeup as always  and description of the record breaking attempt. Best of luck to you and the team:)

Twin Cam Fan and All,

We will be running our Electra GSX on Saturday only as the forecast is calling for rain Sunday. We will leave a little earlier and prep the car so at about 6pm we will be ready to run.

My friend Roberta Vasilow and I had a good chat about her racing Buick Gran Sport 455 STAGE-1 cars. She recommended that I talk to Dave "Turbo Dave" Roland who has a lot of experience with the new generation of computer programmable cars like mine.

Its always good to gather experienced from people, there are many little tips that add up to victory!

Best wishes,

Michael

Wow, what a whirlwind of activity. Too much stuff to list was happening but it all got done and we went to the races. My thanks to the NYC crew that drove 6 hours to get to us in Corning then on to the track in Mt. Morris. The car sounded good, looked great, and we drew a lot of attention from people who stopped to see us at the track. Gary Tyler, GT Performance FORD stopped by too. He built the racing rear differential for our car and he and his wife were at the track.

First the good news is the critical 60' time, the first 60 feet traveled after the green light was improved from last year by about .1 sec. This has a significant impact on the quarter mile time. Since programming for the day prevented us from doing a full quarter, limiting us to the 1/8th, we could at least determine where we stand. So we are quicker in the 60' but I had to back off because she was losing power.

We knew going in that there were some touchy areas and sure enough they reared their heads. The transmission began to slip noticeably and there were indications of coolant coming from the car. We made a single pass then trailered her. It looks like its back to the shop for a while.

Dear All,

I've been holding back on Go Fund Me thinking we could do it all. Sadly, we cannot. We need additional money for a new transmission, new aluminum cylinder heads to prevent detonation, and other msc. things like fluids, and a brake caliper. We've rebuilt the trans 5X in 13 years. We cannot go on cheaply, we need a 1000HP transmission.  Please help us reach our goal!

I took out a loan for $5,000 and had Joe Wilcox Racing Transmissions in PA custom build a Turbo Hydrmatic 400 for my application. It is considerably stronger than my past racing transmission. It has the SFI rated Superbell, 34 element sprag, aluminum drum, Redline competition clutches, tranny brake with reversed valve body. ACC Torque converter is 3,800 stall and 3,200 hp capable.F32E14D3-ABF2-4744-AAAD-4E7A80730A6E.thumb.jpeg.56f5742c7f96faf6ac1913e09b4a49af.jpeg

I don't look at the Buick Modified section often, but this caught my eye.

My Chapter hosted the 2005 National in Batavia, 2005.

Your car was great on display, right next to Bill Antelli's unfinished '32 Model 90 coupe.

Donation #2 is in.

Twas the Night Before Christmas....

'Twas the night before Christmas and in the garage,

No trace of Ford, Chevy, or even a Dodge.:D

The presents were wrapped and the lights were all lit,

So I figured I'd mess with the Electra a bit.

I popped the release and I lifted the hood,

When a deep voice behind me said "looks pretty good."

Well, as you can imagine, I turned mighty quick,

And there, by the workbench, stood good ol Saint Nick!

We stood there a bit, not too sure what to say,

Then he said "don't suppose that you'd trade for my sleigh? ;)

I said "no way, Santa" and started to grin,

"But if you've got the time we could go for a spin!"

His round little mouth, tied up like a bow,

Turned into a smile and he said "hey! Let's go!!"

So as not to disturb all the neighbors' retreat,

We pushed the big Buick into the street,

Then, taking our places to drift down the hill,

I turned on the key and I let MSD spill.

The sound that erupted took him by surprise;

But he liked it a lot, you could tell from his eyes.

With Mickey Thompsons a' crying and exhaust tips aglow,

We headed on out where hot rodders go.

And Santa's grin widened, approaching his ears,

With every shift up as I went through the gears. B)

Then he yelled "can't recall when I've felt so alive!"

So I backed off the gas and said "wanna drive?"

Ol Santa was stunned when I gave him the keys,

When he walked past the headlights he shook at the knees!

The big block exploded with the 430 STAGE II sound!

When he dropped the hammer, Electra GSX shook the ground!

Power shift into second, again into third!

I sat there just watching, at loss for a word,

St. Nick turned to me with a gleam in his eye,

And said “Shut the gates on the turbos and let's fly!”

With a wave of his hand and a prayer to the Lord,

There were twin Turbos & water Injection aboard!

We passed Hemi’s, Cobra's and even Veyron's that night,

Punched over-drive and blasted from sight!

St. Nick turned to me with a gleam in his eye,

And said “Merry Christmas BqUICK!” and we took to the sky!!!"

Having trouble getting my heads done. The best people around here have been booked up for months; I need to send the heads and parts back to TA for them to build the heads. Just wasted 3 months while they sat in shops around here. The good news is that the inspection at our local shop turned up "dings" on the TA valves as though they had been dropped. I get the heads back today and will look into it. Anyway, Tim at TA said they can turn them around quickly.

Back on track after a 14 month cylinder head oddessy. My thanks to TA Performance for getting the job done after 2 other outfits lost their ability to do the job. Thanks Mike T. And crew!

Heads were torqued last week and they took about a week to do! The Cometic .080” thick gaskets had to be drilled for additional cooling passeges, separated, deburred, & re-silicone sealed. The torque fun began there...30ft-lbs, wait 8 hrs; 50ft-lbs, wait 8 hours; bolts 1,3,&5 to 110ft-lbs and the others to 100. Wait 24 hrs and re-torque wait another 24...well you get the point!

Adjusting valve lash and naturally my old pushrods did not fit. Pulled adjustables from my old 455 STAGE-1 race motor. When Exhaust is fully closed as it opens to .050” adjust lash in intake to .005”. When intake is fully open and starts to close .050” adjust exhaust valve lash to .005”. Etc. etc. 16 X. Did 8 and will do the rest tomorrow night.

God Bless you and God Speed,

Hello all,

Mocked up the intake install. The grade 8 bolts "dished" the washers on the last installation, rendering them ineffective. We had water getting pulled into the motor and coming out of the exhaust. A lot of mist would come out under full boost, from I suspect the blow off valves.

The fix is to use 7/16-14 x 1.5 Grade 8 flanged bolts thus eliminating washers. A thin layer of 500F capable silicone will be applied to the 0.070" gaskets, already pre silicone glued to the manifold. This should give me the seal I need around the water passages while giving us the added contact pressure the motor seems to need. The 0.080 thick head gaskets altered the geometry making this necessary.

I followed TA's advice on modifying the valley pan and trimmed much of it away at the intake ports. Siliconed in the front and rear seals and trial bolted the manifold in place. One bolt didn't go in straight last night and I boogered the threads. Popped the mani off tonight and tapped a few holes and we are good to go.

"last night" is probably the at fault words here. Good to hear you're conquering the intake and other problems and back making progress. Keep us updated.

Thanks Mr. Earl. Here is Faithful Pursuit's inspiration my prized 1:18 scale model of the Tuskegee Airmen's first Red Tail fighter escort, the massive P-47 Thunderbolt, the "Jug". The Jug's large radial engine and rear mount turbos, mounted like ours, required a substantial ducting system that made her fuselage deep, giving her body an old fashioned milk jug appearance.

Now Mr. Earl, myself and others of our generation remember the Milk Man delivering those bottles early morning, replacing the empties. My baby brother was born in '64 and I would get the bottles with mom or dad from the aluminum box by the front door. I remember the wax paper caps. The bottles were thick and heavy to stand up to lots of abuse!

This P-47 was on the coach taking the Tuskegee Airmen to President Obama's Inaugural in 2008. I had it autographed by the Tuskegee Airmen as I performed my escort of the men from NY to DC. Is it really 10 years already?!?

Electra weight savings. I am not too worried about her est 4,855lb curb weight, in fact the record holder was 4,700lbs so I didn’t want to be under that! Anyway, I did make some weight savings that affect the front of the car.

1. Aluminum heads -64lbs.

2. Mini-starter -10lbs

3. Modified cross member -7lbs

4. Headers -5lbs

5. Driver -20lbs

6. Removal of Gear Vendors OD -40lbs

this is is about 146lbs that will help with the weight transfer at launch. As power is applied the body will rotate to place more weight on the rear tires, the benefit is added traction and that more power can be applied.

Installed starboard header only to find the a .006" feeler gauge slipped past the copper gasket "seal". So, there was no seal and that is a non-starter for a turbo motor. It takes hours to align those headers and get the bolts into the soft aluminum head without damaging the soft threads. The new gaskets should seal  better than the copper by a long shot. The gaskets are thicker so 1" long by 3/8-16 SHCS were used to secure the headers to the heads. In the mean time I am trying to slow down and do it right!

Just oil primed the motor and adjusted the oil pressure. It was about 70 and I bumped it up to 80psi. The turbo boost will cause greater loads so it's safe to add a little more pressure. TA Performance recommends 10-15 psi per 1000 rpm. She has billet rods and will rev to 7 grand but I hold her down to 6,500rpm. Thats 65 - 97.5 psi. Too high an oil pressure can cause excessive pump drive forces which in turn cause excessive distributor gear drive wear. The cam gear drives the distributor and it drives the oil pump.

We will fire her up, probably Saturday afternoon, after heat wrap is installed on the wiring for the starter and other wires and lines are secured.

Pro Tuner Bob Ream of Imagine Injection synced into the FAST software and tuned the motor as she ran. He adjusted the choke and monitored the fuel values. Now she starts up with a key turn where it used to be a five key turn deal and see saw rpms till she warmed up. Now she starts up high, about 1,500 and goes down to 700 then stays steady at 1200.

Other work includes fixed leaky proportioning valve, re-bled the brakes, rewired part of the electrical system and wrapped it with heat wrap to protect against header burns, got a new yoke with longer spline engagement for the new 3.5 0.10" thick aluminum drive shaft, picked up 110 octane racing fuel, re-installed the exhaust tips with the help of my good buddy Rick, and installed the K&N filters.

All done within the past two weeks. I laid out carpet as I worked under the car last night. It had been a hot and sunny day but now had cooled to the 70's and the stars were out. My bones ached from the hard concrete floor, even carpet couldn't cushion some of those contortions where your more pointed bones off our shoulders remind you they are there.

Hours earlier Rick asked me how long am I going to do this? Well, till I get the record I thought. He reminded me I wasn't getting any younger; running out of time and money not to mention patience. This will be the third consecutive year of attempts to break the elusive Buick Electra quarter mile record.

The record was set 31 years ago by Scotty Guadagno and hid 4,700lb , 700hp nitrous oxide injected STAGE-1 455, 1970 Buick Electra Limited Sport Coupe. The added weight on a grippy surface puts a lot of strain on race car drivelines and components. Scotty's record setting run stands as one of the little known milestones of the one time flagship of the Buick line. Scotty's Electra stands as one of the fastest if not the fastest luxury car in that size and weight range. You could say she was a heavy weight champion.

That record, coveted and known among hard core old-line Buick people is about to be broken.

After running well for about a week, I am seeing telltale signs of coolant leakage. TA Performance recommended some coolant sealer which I will try. It will not run for more than 10 seconds then acts like there is a short in the system. The only thing I can think of is moisture in the cylinders and the MSD trying to compensate. It's weird but that may have been killing our MSD's over the years. This sort of problem may be solved by Bars Leaks on a normal engine but a boosted racing engine may not take to the idea.

Last year, I was at the 1/8th mark when there was an engine explosion of coolant. She blew out the exhaust gasket and #1 piston showed evidence of detonation. There had been the same telltale signs of rusty exhaust water and hard to idle until warm.

The hard choice, but the smart one, is to pull the engine and go for a full rebuild. Sadly, there are no Buick engine people near here; the good builders are too pricey or dead. There is obviously something wrong with the deck of the block or something else causing this. This is perhaps the most disappointing thing to happen since I blew the first 430in this car 39 years ago! The past 14 months of cylinder head delays and now pushing for an October deadline hard for the past 3 months seems like a lot of wasted effort. It was a risk I took when I opted to not pull the engine.

Even if I could get it to run, risking damage to the new heads or losing the car in a wreck would certainly not be worth it.

I talked to a few friends about the issue, John Csordes & Pete Majestic who offered good troubleshooting suggestions. I was really bummed out and they encouraged me not to take apart just yet. Talked to Mike T. at TA Performance today and told him about my issue. 0 pressure in #5 and he said it sounded like one of the valves was not closing.

I will fire her up tomorrow and see whether we can get her to run right.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! It’s been a while since I’ve updated this thread. Lots of water under the bridge.

September’20

The new Holley Super Sniper fuel injection system has received it’s initial digital tune from Imagine Injection in Phoenix, AZ, and runs fine. So many new features to test and she’s dropped ~85lbs in weight with aluminum competition heads replacing the stainless steel. An aluminum driveshaft reduces the weight and rotational mass of the steel one. A few other things help here and there. I don’t know the status of NY International Raceway Park but it would be great if we could go for the big Electra 1/4 mile record before the end of the season.

Took her to the track and blew something.

Jan. ‘21

Opened up twin-turbo Guadagno pro/built BBB 430. Motor looked good, no cracks in block, pistons are fine, just main bearing wear. She held up okay for 11 years. There is evidence of detonation which probably caused the crankcase to be pressurized and the smoke we saw. Need to get rid of the MSD Pro Billet ignition and put in Holley to connect with the Super Sniper. I suspect that when we moved from FAST to Holley EFI the ignition was not completely compatible.

Back in July ‘21, Mike and Mickey Marollo at Marollo Racing completed my twin turbo Big Block Buick re-build. My thanks to you guys for your expert machine and assembly work!

December 2021

All new Super Sniper EFI replaced by Holley in addition to the complete new Holley distributor and ignition system. We will install over the winter!

Merry Christmas All, this year we are remembering the late Dave Machuga with my annual release of this poem.

Twas the Night Before Christmas....

'Twas the night before Christmas and in the garage, No trace of Ford, Chevy, or even a Dodge.

The presents were wrapped and the lights were all lit, So I figured I'd mess with the Buick Electra a bit.

Crystal Blue body with a top thats snow white my ‘69 Electra’s a heck of a sight. With GSX hood scoops, hood tach, and Red spoiler out back; the STAGE-1 Electra is real hard to catch.

A NASCAR CUP chassis built by Dave Machuga upstate made sure she’d win races like ole “78”!

I popped the release and I lifted the hood, When a deep voice behind me said "looks pretty good."  Well, as you can imagine, I turned mighty quick, And there, by the workbench, stood good ole Saint Nick!

We stood there a bit, not too sure what to say, Then he said "don't suppose that you'd trade for my sleigh? I said "no way, Santa" and started to grin, "But if you've got the time we could go for a spin!" His round little mouth, tied up like a bow, Turned into a smile and he said "hey! The sound that erupted took him by surprise; But he liked it a lot, you could tell from his eyes.

With Mickey Thompsons a' crying and exhaust tips aglow, We headed on out where hot rodders go. And Santa's grin widened, approaching his ears,

So I backed off the gas and said "wanna drive?" Ole Santa was stunned when I gave him the keys,
When he walked past the headlights he shook at the knees!  The big block exploded with the STAGE II sound!
When he dropped the hammer, The Deuce shook the ground!
Power shift into second, again into third! I sat there just watching, at loss for a word,

St. Nick turned to me with a gleam in his eye, And said “Lets get TURBOs & then let’r Fly!” With a wave of his hand and a prayer to the Lord,
There were twin Turbos & water & alcohol Injection aboard!

We passed Hemi’s, Cobra's and Veyron's that night, Santa punched over-drive and blasted from sight!

St. Nick turned to me with a gleam in his eye, And said “Merry Christmas BqUICK!” and we took to the sky!!!"
