Pete in PA
I need to do some research and learn whether this is the same as the rear end in my 36 D2. I haven't gotten my car on the road yet but there's so much old lube sprayed around the pinion seal I'm afraid the rear was run with insufficient lube and will need bearings or even a ring & pinion. jpage
Pete , I have some extra rears. I think 1 is a hypoid rear.
Pete in PA
That's good to know, Jim. The rear in my car may be fine but the amount of dried up lube sprayed around the underside has me worried. Time will tell.
jpage
I think that most of them get to looking really grimey like that. Good chance the front seal is shot and the seal surface on the yoke is worn badly.
Hudsy Wudsy
Seeing as this rear end is out of a coupe, it's undoubtedly a 3:90 gear ratio, as opposed to the 4:10 that was standard in sedans. Not a huge difference, but a little better for highway use. It's important to confirm the ratio before buying it, though.
countrytravler
I believe the e brake is in the rear end instead of the trans.

Same year Chrysler product and the Dodge had the parking brake on the transmission and the DeSoto had them on the rear shoes/drums? That surprises me. Anyone know for sure? DeSoto owners care to weigh in? I don't have a DeSoto parts book to check numbers. Not that I've had any luck verifying numbers in my Dodge parts book... I need to find a vintage Hollander catalog. The Chry and DeSoto with OD had e brake on the rear axle. Here is a picture of my 36 Desoto trans,
Pete in PA
Well that sure is different than my D2 transmission! But did all the Chrysler and DeSoto cars *have* the OD transmission or was it optional on those cars?
