1921 wheel/rim set up

I think the car is a Buick - a 4 or a 6?

 

The plate suggests the inventor of the set up has applied for a patent. 

 

Has anyone seen this before?

Those wheels are demountable at the center,that's unusual for a car that old by itself. I don't know about the carrier.

I gather that is what the patent has been applied for. Seems a simple enough system - much as we do today, and the same as many European cars were, especially those fitted with Sankey wheels.

My guess is that the license plate is a temporary plate;

 

That is,  the owner had been issued this license plate number, and the actual license plate had not been manufactured yet.

Some Maxwells had the full spoked wheel mounted on the rear.

These wheels have lockrings when most cars of that era had split rims,I'm beginning to think they are those one-piece cast steel wheels.

Center demountable was uncommon but had been used earlier. There was an aftermarket accessory to do that to your Model T Ford. This is a 1910 Rambler with factory standard center demountable wheels.
