Spinneyhill
I measured the diameter, observed the space available and fronted up at the local auto-parts joint. Thermostats come in set diameters and the helper re-appeared in a few moments with one to do the job. Thermostats come in set diameters and the helper re-appeared in a few moments with one to do the job. The 34 and up Chrysler product thermostats are dual action: When cold they divert flow from the head to the water pump to aid in fast warm up. Once warm they close off the bypass and direct the flow to the radiator. So just matching the diameter is not enough. But not to worry, at least if you live in the US, as replacements are available even if they look a little different from the original.
Spinneyhill
Thank you. I didn't know that. So they seal on two surfaces, one for the silver bit and one for the brass bit? Edited April 11, 2019 by Spinneyhill (see edit history)

Can't say for sure as my car is a '33 and has a more typical thermostat.
