buick special Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 (edited) Guys A quick question How do you remove the glass bowl on the fuel filter of a 1940 special? most of the old filters I have worked on have a knurled screw on them This one has a spring doohicky Edited August 10, 2017 by buick special (see edit history)
Larry Schramm Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 You should be able to slide the bale with the spring on it off to the side to remove the glass bowl.
Terry Wiegand Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Photos are really nice to show what a person is talking about. I don't think that I'd know what a 'doohicky' is without having one shown and described for me. Terry Wiegand Out Doo Dah Way
Guest Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 In the obscure illustrated dictionary "doohickey" is nine pages ahead of "muckett" which I am sure you do know is part of a Goose's Bridle and sixteen pages before "thingamajig" which is three pages before "whatsit".

buick special Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 Hi Guys I got the glass bowl off the ac filter and it is empty inside is there suppose to be a screw in filter element inside the glass bowl ? if so does anyone know the part number?
GARY F Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 No filter inside. It fills with gas when motor is running and collects sediment so it does not get in the carb.
Guest Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 We used to sell two types in the 60's and 70's when I was in GM parts. We sold sediment bowls which were simply an inlet, an outlet and a glass bowl to catch sediment. We also sold fuel filters (sediment bowl type) which had a ceramic (white) or metal (copper) filter and a spring to hold it up in place inside the bowl. Some fuel pumps came either way as well.
buick special Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 thank you both for your replies can I use a filter on a non filter bowl? also is there suppose to be a metal washer / spacer on the bottom of the glass bowl where the bracket holds the bowl in place? When I removed the bowl I noticed after I cleaned it that when I put it back on it did not tighten as though it needed a spacer on the bottom of the glass bowl
BuickBob49 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) Do you have a rubber gasket that goes between the top lip of your glass bowl and the metal cap? My Carter fuel strainer bowl has one. There was a discussion thread on this topic several months ago. NAPA carries at least two different gaskets--small and large. Edited August 11, 2017 by BuickBob49 Grammatical (see edit history)
Spinneyhill Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 The idea of the bowl is that it acts as a stilling basin. Sediment is carried by moving fluid. When it enters the bowl the fluid basically stops and the sediment is dropped. Once at the bottom it is not picked up again because the fluid leaves at the top. 1
Guest Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 As BuickBob49 says there are two different size gaskets and several different size filters. Here is an exploded picture of one type. Do a Google search and you will fined hundreds of illustrations.
